As a representative of the PSI Audio line, I had the opportunity to take home a pair of their Heritage 3 loudspeakers from the Axpona show. These are an active 3-way design, with proprietary drivers, powered by 2 class A/B amps for tweeter and mid, and class D for the woofer. They are pictured below.
I was impressed. Midrange and top-end was accurate, three-dimensional, with plenty of PRAT. With reference to the FR 30’s along side them, I don’t think they gave up anything, with the exception of the low end where the 30’s were tighter and deeper. If I could have moved the PSI’s out more and mounted them on absorbers, I think they would have improved in the bass.
All of this led me to the conclusion that there is no inherently “best” type of speaker…planar, electrostatic, conventional, hybrid, etc., but how well they are designed and implemented. These PSI’s are designed to be ruler-flat for studio monitoring. It shows. Add to that they are internally driven by custom amps, all the better.
I’ve owned active ATC speakers in the past and I think these are better. A recent AbSound review of the studio version gave them praise. Put a pair of the PSI’s with an MU2 and you would have a killer, near cable free, system. Good stuff.
Love the aesthetic. Old school cool!
Best,
JP
How does the Jays sound into the Grimm? Is streaming any better?
Like the way you mounted the C214s.
The first photo makes the PSI speakers look big. The second photo makes PSI look small next to the FR30’s, lol.
Streaming has gotten better with the addition of the muon Pro, Tempus switch, and Stealth Ethernet and power cables. A high res and well recorded stream can rival CD’s thru the Jays. On balance CD’s are better but the gap has closed considerably.
Nice room, but my wife will never allow me to cover the nice garden view with these wine-cork (I have thousands) display boards; not even when I made her dead drunk.
Thank you for the reply…I am amazed at just how well the Jay sounds! When I read or hear how some say a transport..is a transport..I just shake my head in disbelief…It is a very special transport that is hard to beat!
