Quad 306 and 520F Upgrades

Hi, I’m just re-capping my 520f as per the dada electronics’ quadspot blog post. I just read your post re; removing the input transformers. Did you literally just move the jumpers from the input of this little module to the amp board? does it make a big difference in the sound? Kind regards, Mark

I noticed an improvement, but I don’t need balanced connections.
it is as simple as that - the balancing modules were originally an add on that could be fitted by the customer (oh the happy days when manufacturers would routinely trust their customers to open their kit!).

To confirm, the 520f manual is available online and includes the procedure of installing the modules: the removal is just the reverse.

I replaced the input XLRs with RCAs too…

Hey, thanks for that!
I might leave as is-I do use mine in a studio environment where most of the connecting kit is on balanced XLR connections. Although these little modules look like they’ve been properly roasted over the years! I think I ought to measure a few things and correct as necessary.
Speaker outputs have to go though. XLRs just don’t do it for me when it comes to speaker outputs.

Thx M

Yeah mounted on the heatsinks may be not the best place for the modules

Have to say I prefer XLR to Speakon for speakers (didn’t think I would)!
Back in the 70s / early 80s it seemed to be a standard on e.g. PA amps.

Yes, Re XLRs for speakers…they’re fine as long as you don’t want to use anything too heavy on your speaker cable…which of course…you do! Try soldering chunky speaker cable into an XLR! yuk!
