Quote of the Day

My favorite—one of my favorites from P.G. Wodehouse:

“A melancholy-looking man, he had the appearance of one who has searched for the leak in life’s gas-pipe with a lighted candle.”

Maybe “Ancient Greeks” scans better than “Ancient Egyptians”?

Touche! But what did we know? '80’s Art-School comedy. Few history classes taken. Greeks referring to Egypt. (waves hands vaguely toward the Past) Way back when…

Though Dave missed a lyrical opportunity. Could certainly hear him singing, “An-Cient-E-Gyp-tians” in the groove.

I have a friend. Seriously into audio but more importantly into music. Even though a generation younger than me, he took Latin in HS. Point is the guy is bright but he still thought, when he was much younger, that Beethoven and Christ were contemporaries.

Ask the average anyone to tell you the years the American Civil War was fought.

Cryin’ :joy:

Wait - so like, you are 100 years old at this point? Or what throwback HS was this?:cowboy_hat_face:

(Apologies to QOTD thread adherents for this side…thang)

I’m 70 and he’s 49. My father taught Latin and that’s why I took it for four years. He did it voluntarily when he was in HS and I tip my hat to him. The Beethoven thing aside. :upside_down_face:

PS: What does an upside-down face mean? I promise to release the hostages from my hijacking this thread.

I’m just shocked he went to a HS where that was an option. Was it “tony”? I’m about to be 65 and it was definitely on the way out at that point.

Imagine a future “archeologist” attempting to devine the meaning of the upside-down smiley face…

Okay, I’m breaking my promise about releasing the hostages but just ask my ex-wife about me and promises…

It was a HS in the SF Bay area and according to him it had a huge student population. Maybe with that many kids they could scrape together enough to justify the class but even so finding a Latin teacher must’ve been a challenge at that point.

My daughter took Latin in HS, private HS. She is 27. She teaches Latin at the University of Arkansas as a TA.

Fun fact about time. We are closer in time to T-Rex than T-Rex was to Stegosaurus.

Dayamn! Nice. Not kidding. I respect that, as a fan of human language.

May be one of those things that is hard to translate into something…“useful” as they say (= makes you money).

I completely missed the (after-the-fact) fact that when I took languages, I should have taken Japanese and Spanish rather than French. A decade or two later those were not particularly relevant.

Anger, he smiles
Towering in shiny metallic purple armour
Queen Jealousy, envy waits behind him
Her fiery green gown sneers at the grassy ground

Blue are the life-giving waters taken for granted
They quietly understand
Once happy turquoise armies lay opposite ready
But wonder why the fight is on
But they’re all bold as love, yeah, they’re all bold as love
Yeah, they’re all bold as love
Just ask the axis

Getting ahead of the Weekend:

Tears of Rage - Dylan and Manuel:

We carried you in our arms
On Independence Day
And now you’d throw us all aside
And put us on our way

Oh what dear daughter ’neath the sun
Would treat a father so
To wait upon him hand and foot
And always tell him, “No?”

Tears of rage, tears of grief
Why must I always be the thief?
Come to me now, you know
We’re so alone
And life is brief

One last off topic about her. I just learned she is to be published. She worked on a team last year translating one of the books of Nonnus’ Dionysiaca from Ancient Greek.
