Recording DSD, playing back over PWT

If you have any 176.4k or 192k PCM files you might try those just to cut out some variables. To be honest I don’t remember which software I used to burn my last DoP DVDs but they can work fine with the PWT when you say the right magic words. I do remember building a lot of coasters until I got a couple of good DVDs last time.

Seems I’m having an issue with 192 PCM files as well. PWT will play them fine for a while, but eventually end up “choking” on them. Stuttering/skipping. Redbooks play without any issues, CD-Rs and retail copies. Possible that I need a better burner or better quality DVD-Rs? I use Verbatim DVD+Rs and burn with a USB LG Slim. Not the best burner I know, but I’ve never had issues with it. Doesn’t seem like it is an issue with the PWT since redbooks play without a hitch.

Sure, I can stream the DSDs to the DS using my bridge, but the PWT has it beat for sound quality. DSD/PWT/DS is an amazing combo.

Radioclash,

I had a memory of this not being too difficult so I just converted some DSF files with foobar, and wrote them to a DVD. They played fine on a PWT as DSD files. I think the difference between my results and yours is that I didn’t use imgburn. I just wrote the files to disk as audio files with Windows Media Player.

By the way, thanks for the opportunity to spend a little time with Stevie Ray Vaughn in Music Room 1.

Thanks Dave, I will experiment with other burning tools/processes.

Sadly, looks as though I will have to send my beloved PWT in for repairs. Alex at PS thinks it is a bad drive. Plays high res material for about 30 minutes and then starts to choke on it. If I shut it down for ten minutes, it will play fine for another 30 before gagging on the high res again. Almost seems as if the drive is overheating. Redbooks play fine. Very odd.

I will miss my baby!

This is indeed strange, intriguingly so. Please report back after it comes back home.

For those interested, I found this nice little guide for converting DSD to DoP using foobar. It also includes links to the files that you will need as well as the necessary settings within foobar. Very handy. Scroll down to section 3.

To my ears, it is worth the extra work. DSD sounds just that much sweeter through the PWT than through the bridge.

As is so often the case, the simplest explanation is usually the best one. Bad drive, nothing more elegant. PS Audio shipped out a replacement drive and the PWT is back to sweet perfection.

Excellent news! Simple and non-elegant wins.

what software do we use for DSD to wav in mac? Foobar is only available in windows from what i can see.

I tried Aul Converter but its $240. Wonder is that worth it to pay? How much is Foobar?

Try DSD Master for DSD to PCM conversion:

Foobar is open source freeware.

Foobar is free but you’re correct that it is Windows only. DSD Master from the BitPerfect folks (available in the Mac App Store) can convert DSD files to WAV (I would use AIFF as it has better tagging ability, especially on a Mac). River MC might also be able to convert DSD to PCM (it can do so on the fly and will usually do so by default if the bit streaming option is not checked).
