Are the remanufactured speakers “broken in” or does it depend on how much the previous owner played them?
IOW, Do they get some run time before sending them back out?
I just got my 2nd pair of FR 5’s and they don’t sound as bass heavy as the last pair. To be fair, I have different electronics now. Maybe this amp has better bass control? They sound great, but I was just wondering.
We don’t specifically break-in any of the open box / b-stock speakers. Some of these are review units, trade show and customer returns that have been tested and repackaged.
While driver units can change slightly around their tuning/resonance they generally change relatively little (slightly softer suspension gives complementary changes that lower the resonance and Q somewhat).
I decided to set up my calibrated mic today and see what we were getting for bass response from the FR5.
I was disappointed to see the bass drop off quickly at 63hz. That’s not right I thought, as these are rated to go much lower. I moved them fwd and back towards the wall, but no improvement. I put them back where they were (Cardas placement), and tried to figure out what was different from last time I had a pair.
My Magnepan 3.7i speakers had been scooted out of the way, sitting parallel to the side walls behind the 5’s.
Ok, decided to move the other speakers to the next room and measure again.
Unbelievable, flat bass down to 32hz as advertised! I knew better, but didn’t think it would make that much difference.
