Requesting guidance to begin

Hi everyone,

Thrilled to be joining the PS Audio community! I’ve recently started diving deeper into high-quality audio and came across PS Audio’s gear and philosophy — it really resonated with me.

I’m here to learn more about the world of hi-fi, explore different setups, and connect with others who are passionate about sound. Whether it’s DACs, amps, speakers, or just chasing that perfect listening experience, I’m excited to be part of the conversation.

If you have any beginner-friendly threads, setup tips, or gear recommendations, I’d love to check them out. Looking forward to learning from you all and hopefully contributing as I go.

Thanks for the warm welcome — happy to be here!

Welcome to the forum. There are so many great things about starting out and folks here are very helpful and knowledgeable. In order to get the most helpful responses, try detailing what you are currently using as your main music system and what medium are you most interested in; CD’s, streaming, vinyl records?

Welcome! You will find lots of folks here with plenty of information and guidance. I stumbled upon this place when I began (and still are) looking for hi-fi gear. The education I have gotten from members here has been awesome and such a great bunch of audiophiles who are so passionate about the hobby. I’m just a dude finding my way around the audio world so I can’t contribute such knowledge like the better minds here. Trust me, if you ever have a question about anything audio these guys will have answers.

Welcome! This is a nice forum, friendly and helpful.

What I wish I knew starting out I’ll offer as my bit of advice: get the best source you can afford as a start. That will pay benefits on down the line as you progress.

Welcome! I have about 2,000 simply videos posted on YouTube if that helps. :blush: Let us know if you have any questions.

Welcome, and there is a great deal of help available in this forum.

In addition to telling us about your current system, it would be helpful to know what kind(s) of music you prefer: for example, some gear that is wonderful for acoustic music is not the best choice for heavy metal or other sorts of pop.

Also tell us about your listening space – dimensions, whether it is exclusively for music or a shared living room, etc. When I first got into audio seriously, I had no idea how important the room is; it really is a system component, and you need to learn how it interacts with the equipment.

@Leyka, welcome to the forum! Great group of folks here. I learn something new here every day :grinning_face:

Welcome - you are in the right place - I have made some amazing improvements to my system based on advice from people on this forum… enjoy the journey!

Welcome! This is a nice forum, friendly and helpful.

Just playing devil’s advocate, of course.

@Paul
Thanks Paul! I’ve actually watched a few of your YouTube vids already—crazy how much there is to learn just from those alone. Appreciate the welcome!

@magister
Good point on the room… honestly I never thought about that until recently. Funny how the walls and furniture end up being “gear” too, right? I’ll share details once I get a clearer picture of my space.

@jazzophile
Thanks! You’re right—every scroll here feels like a little lesson. Nice to see such a mix of experience levels.

@Hoku
That’s encouraging. I’m already eyeing a few tweaks just from lurking around—feels like one of those hobbies where the rabbit hole never ends.

@danofesherintheuk
Speakers, got it. You know what? That actually makes a lot of sense… feels like everything else gets filtered through them anyway. I’ll keep that front of mind. I’m just looking at the reviews now and I’ll definitely ask you guys later!

Hello, and welcome. I have three suggestions:

Your listening room characteristics are as important as anything else. You may (probably) will need to get some type of room treatments, such as bass traps, diffusion panels, etc.

Consider buying used from The Music Room or elsewhere.

Whatever setup you wind up with, enjoy it. Don’t get sidetracked by newer or fancier equipment. It’s about the music, not conspicuous consumption or an endless process of consuming. That said, it’s only natural to be aware of improvements to your system, and to want to do (buy) those things at some point.

Best of luck to you!

@softlight64 Besides music, the most important things are the accompanying components, such as candles and wine :slight_smile: hahaha

Jim Smith’s “Get Better Sound” and Paul McGowan’s “The Audiophile’s Guide: The Stereo” are good references.

The greatest temptation is to run out and start buying stuff. Speakers first yes, but which speakers and why? Do you prefer listening at low volumes or want a system that sounds great for late night listening? Or do you intend to listen at higher volumes so it’s okay if you have to pour on the coals a bit before the speakers come alive?

In addition to the great advice you’re already getting I’d suggest defining the listening experience you’re looking for and related goals for your system. Best of luck!

OP:

I can’t recommend this resource highly enough…

Just buy it!

Thank you! This guide is perfect!
