He was an excellent musician. Sorry he’s gone. He paired up perfectly with Pat Metheny.
Yes and many others.
Also RIP Joseph Shabalala. Saw Ladysmith back in the day. Made me realize what matters.
Very sad to hear that he lost the battle at the end. Excellent, from-the-heart pianist, keyboardist with such lovely disassociation of the hands! Lyle was largely the main reason I got into the conservatory in my town (Manuel De Falla in Buenos Aires), not because of wanting to play in a band or live off performing etc… but for trying to replicate at home and in my intimate chambers a little bit of that emotion / expression of his.
Just got Metheny’s ‘Letter from Home’ CD ready in my DMP, but I don’t want to play it tonight as I’m sure by the time I get to the Dream of the Return (as sung by my compatriot, Pedro Aznar) I’ll be in tears.
It’s feeling like 2016 all over again. Still not over Neil Peart.
A nice tribute to Joseph Shabalala from local folks eTown:
