It’s not relevant. Anything over 2x is sufficient. Odds are the next track you play, MQA will report higher. Core load can cause lower numbers…if any db activities are ongoing you might see this for a bit.
Having disagreed with Paul the other day about preference for open and closed systems (I think both have merits and I’ve used both extensively), I note Roon’s long introduction included the following:
Other changes and bug fixes in Roon 1.8:
Fixed unintentional volume increase on Android
Fixed Roon API not returning Internet Radio browser data
Fixed crash in the File browser when network share becomes unavailable
Updated “Find Roon OS” dialog
Fixed inability to connect to certain Shairport AirPlay devices
Fixed inability to adjust volume on certain AirPlay devices
Fixed some QNAP storage issues
MacOS: Improved UI handling when moving between displays with different scaling factors
Sonos: fix for issue where Roon misreports which track is actually being played
Faster loading of History
Updated hotkeys list on MacOS to remove non-functional shortcuts
Fixed spacing problems with ‘Composer by’ text
Performance improvements for Roon running on roans
This highlights that no system is closed because at the end of the day you have to implement a control app on one or more of iOS, OSX, Android and Windows10, and they all give problems. Roon seems to have more problems with iOS and OSX, whereas for the years I used Auralic they never had an Android app (I use Android) because they found it too problematic.
One reason it costs $100 per annum is probably because they have to pay a lot of programmers to develop such sophisticated software.
My update didn’t go so smoothly. I mean it’s up and running and functional, but it tried my patience a bit during the process. It took three tries at downloading the core on my iMac. The first two showed the download progress bar stalling somewhere about in the middle, and stayed there for several hours before I’d start again from scratch. Third time it worked. The update on my iPhone went well, but on the iPad it stalled, not unlike the core download, and I had to restart it a second time before it took. Our internet connection was fine during all this, and completely unencumbered.
But like I said, it’s there and working now. I’ll run it through its paces over the next few days, at least as much as an admitted newb is capable of, before I make a decision whether to continue with the service.
All went smoothly. However, the new version uses larger fonts for titles, but smaller fonts for track info. Also, they use grey fonts instead of black for normal text and blue hyperlinks. Also, to allow for more album labels, they shrunk the size of cover art. Methinks the designer of the new user interface has interests in optometry!
Edit: sound quality has improved for me. A few others noted the same
Often it seems programmers change look and feel because they can, not because it is needed. Cynically, I think it is done to create the impression of “New and Improved!”
Are the Roonies on the Roon forum reporting improved sound? Any indication from Roon this should be the case?
