Roon 1.8 Announcement

I know the lyrics were there before 1.8. What I never saw before, and have only seen on one song now, is a page of lyrics that actually scrolled up the screen automatically, with the currently-sung line highlighted.

Scrolling lyrics have been there, but only on some songs, not on all of them. It is sort of cool.

Yes, saw that on 1.7.

I also notice on the OSX Desktop app there are some quick toggle buttons top right to details of composer and artist. Thatā€™s handy. I cannot see them in the Android app, but you can get to the same metadata after a few taps.

It is sort of cool.

SoundHound and other apps have had scrolling lyrics for a long time. Quite amusing.

Yes, Iā€™ve been playing around with those.

The scrolling lyric thing is interesting. Unless anyone thinks theyā€™re on only a certain genre or something, Iā€™ve now seen it on two pretty disparate tracks - ā€œBlue Skiesā€ from Diana Krallā€™s ā€œTurn Up the Quietā€ and ā€œIn the Drinkā€ from Barenaked Ladiesā€™ ā€œI Was Born on a Pirate Ship.ā€

they dropped the ball big time with international users. their app now crashes if your OS language is not US English. It happened to me and lots of other people. this is a show stopper from minute 1.

Since downgrades are not an option, you get stuck to changing your entire regional settings to make it work. They should have beta tested better. This is basic functionality.

This is how it should NOT be done

No lyrics in a few random operas or Beethoven 9.

Quelle horreur, or as Paul would say, sacred blue!

one major bummer:

You can no longer see whether a track/album has been added to a playlist.

I have a giant ā€œDinner party jazzā€ playlist (hundreds of mellow jazz tracks), and I add albums/tracks all the time. Viewing the album in 1.7 thereā€™d be a subhead for any track that tells what playlists itā€™s in. Now, nothing.

Duplicate tracks in playlists is now going to be pretty common, i reckon.

So, hopefully they can bring back the playlist labels, or at least alert me if Iā€™m adding a duplicate track. (The latter will probably be tricky, as each track has a unique ID, whether itā€™s tidal or qobuz or local, and the bitrate, and which pressing/release, etcā€¦ so itā€™ll only be able to tell if youā€™re adding the exact file.)

ā€¦ or you could listen to the track twice.
It does illustrate that this must have been a root and branch re-write.
I donā€™t use playlists.
Roon do have a record of fixing things. I hope they have a way of filtering the complaints from the constructive comments like yours.

I take the whole package as is and am happy that overall it is better and that I speak English.

my project managers would love me if I just told them to live with software bugs

yeah, Iā€™m guessing this will get a look-see. I mean, from a database perspective, itā€™s just a label. Should be fairly easy to fix. (If they WANT to fix it.)

Youā€™re right tho, thereā€™s a ton of hating out there, and hopefully roon has got their wits about them to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Yeah it is awesome with cover art art too bringing out the darkest.

Like so dark I canā€™t see it!

Iā€™m more worried about the labels, but how do you classify LC?

Looks OK for me on iPhone XR iOS 14.4

Apparently my Roon Core was updating album art for an hour. Though it had not been requested. I have had that happen in previous versions of Roon with long periods of no album art.in 1.6 and 1.7. Sometimes days apparently still works same though artwork is now back.

You might have a little db corruption. You can save off the existing and start fresh to decide if itā€™s worth loosing all your favorites, stats, etc.

Thatā€™s pretty funny. Are you SURE itā€™s there? Lol

All my Roon software updates were uneventful. I have clients on IOS and macOS, with the core running on a Small Green Computer sonicTransporter.

I donā€™t immediately hear an obvious difference in my system, but it sounds good to me.

The UI changes are not my idea of an improvement ā€“ especially on the macOS client.

Generally, my experience with Roon has been positive. I bought a lifetime membership years ago and have no regrets.

Yeah it makes no difference. I dumped my Roon Core Database twice in the past after having it lockup. Then reloaded it clean to finally get it running with 1.7. I did learn that Roon remote relaod sometimes works although a new Roon remote sw is not available a clean reload of it will sometimes revive a busted un reponsive Roon Database.

I no longer create Roon playlists only in Qobuz. Since Roon Core is fiiled with Brain Farqs and you never know when it needs a good trashing to get it to work again.
