Well, that has never been my first thought when seeing your handle. Now I can’t “unsee” (unhear) it!
Thanks for that, not.

My experience in the computer industry dates back to the early 1980s, working for Burroughs, Digital Equipment, Informix, and later my own consulting business.
NEVER have I been more afraid of installing the latest version of a software package, given all the hoopla on the Roon Community forum. What if it doesn’t work? What if it bricks my system?
I was sorta forced into upgrading. All my iOS devices were set to Autoupdate, so all the remotes went 1.8. Last night I had to control the stream from my last non-updated platform of a MacBook Pro.
This morning, I updated the Core on the Mac Mini server, and ‘things are better off than I had feared’.
Phew…
Plus… so far I am seeing only square album covers and artist’s pictures. Did Roon take out the ‘art in a circle’ feature that everyone had been complaining about?
I run ROCK in a VM and snapshot the VM before every upgrade. If I need to I can restore to a previous snapshot. Bit of a hack on my end to give me a “downgrade” path. I’ve never had to test it though as I’ve always been able to stick with the current version.
Smart
I did what I could. I did a Time Machine backup of the server, and then double-backups of the 1.7 Roon database.
Problem was, all of the iOS devices went to 1.8 and couldn’t control the 1.7 Core (that I know of). And also as far as I know, there is no way to revert the iOS devices from 1.8 to 1.7.
Roon would’ve forced me into an upgrade eventually. That’s what Roon does.
yeah, was gonna say this, too. No way around it. This we know and lovingly embrace.
One of the major gripes on the roon community site is about the “waveform” and that it’s less dramatic now. (It’s the progress bar, but for local files it shows the volume intensity/range for the track.)
I’ve noticed it, and yeah, it might be that it’s more subtle now. Like the “range” has been compressed. And maybe it’s shorter? Ahdunno.
It’s a visual, has nothing to do with sound quality or volume, but it seems like it’s a big deal for some. Nearly a show stopper. I’m not quite getting it. Anyone see this as an issue?
That is what everyone does. At some point support for older version of code is stop.
i’m still using Windows 7 on one of our dev VMs
I understand that. But you don’t get any support. Heck I remember when support ended for Windows XP. I had a ton of customers who where using XP in their production networks and they held out until the end.
yeah, i’m pretty much resigned to upgrading soon. I just think windows 10 is so unintuitive.
I’m a mac guy otherwise, so I just need to suck it up I guess.
While you do not get support for old code, you can at least still use it. As I understand it with Roon you update or you get cut off from the mother ship.
I agree with you, the waveform feature is eye-candy only and is unimportant.
However, as we see here when a PS Audio product is modified, even the seemingly least important aspects are critical in someone’s mind
And that happens remarkably quickly. I don’t know the exact timeframe that Roon forces you into an upgrade, but it’s certainly not a very long window.
so is that still 1.7? (my memory is so bad I don’t even remember what it looked like!)
No, that’s 1.8 but I purposely picked a track that is mixed to 11. I don’t really use the waveform for anything other than eye-candy. Especially since it only works for local files and I’ve been mostly streaming lately.
one guy on the roon forum says he uses it while listening to classical music to see where the crescendos are so he can quickly turn the music down and not bother anyone else in the house.
This would make me INSANE.
It would be like playing a video game.
Someone above mentioned they were forced into upgrading. You can control how Roon updates are applied to your computer. If you go into “Settings > About” and click on the “cog wheel” graphic and it will give you 3 options for upgrading Roon updates.
