Just pulled the trigger. Spoke to Zack as well. Very nice guy. I must say our pleasant chat helped soften the blow of a big purchase. I was kind of on the fence mainly because I’ve had no major issues with the DMP.
It’s great in this day and age to see a bunch of people excited about a transport, it truly warms my heart. Most of my peers don’t own anything that could play a CD, and I’m purchasing yet another disc spinner!
I, too questioned whether I should replace perfectly fine DMP with the PST. 18 months later zero regrets. Constantly rediscovering my collection. I have slowed down my SACD purchases as CD sounds so darn good on the PST.
Welcome to the club. I’ve wrung my hands about the decision here more than enough for everyone, and finally popped for it on Friday. Can’t wait for it to arrive.
I asked a couple of PST questions on a different thread but nobody from PSA answered them. The main thing that I want to know is:
what comes out of the coax port if a Direcstream dac is connected to the I2S port with a hybrid (or single layer) disc inserted (and the transport is configured to read the DSD layer. I ask because I have a spare Directstream but want/need S/PDIF PCM into my DEQX digital crossover (the manual mentions downsampling (but James reckons there is no downsampling - it also mentions that all ports are always active (I’m presuming that there’s only one laser)). I’d hope that 88.2/24 is output, i.e. the active PCM port does actually get a downsampled PCM stream (as I say, James reckons there is no downsampling).
Thanks st50maint - radioclash will also be interested in your findings. I am disconcerted (to put it mildly) that PSA have chosen not to respond to my question because the manual is clearly wrong/misleading. It would have been better to have written the manual in a way that a programmer would understand so that every decision made by the software is precisely specified. Thanks again (and to others that tried to help).
Sorry no one got back to you. James is on vacation and I’ve been a bit swamped. My bad. To the best of my memory, if you’re playing a DSD file off an SACD layer through the I2s port then nothing will come out of the other outputs.
If you are playing a PCM file, or a DSD file but not from a protected SACD layer, then all the outputs work.
We restrict the DSD output to the I2S output if it is read from a protected layer from the SACD. When that occurs, the laser is only reading that layer and there are no other formats read or available.
Oops, I hadn’t spotted that (so thanks). The manual is totally misleading and contradictory. I don’t know why PSA didn’t own up to that straight away.
Update: Actually I had seen the statement that I2S would be used to output the DSD layer, however, I thought that given that all outputs are meant to be active and the fact that the manual talks about downsampling, I thought I’d double check as I’ve tried using mu Oppo players to send PCM via HDMI and used an extractor to get the data into S/PDIF but the results aren’t as good as I’d expect PS Audio to implement if they’d done what I’d hoped they’d do. Anyway I’ll shut up now as I don’t want to bore everyone any longer! (I also deserve a prize for one of the longest sentences ever written that’s not Welsh or German)
