Smitten With The Magnepan LRS

@Palouse Do the M700’s run very warm to the touch? Not scalding hot, but warm?

@dancingsea Not particularly warm, ambient is about 70F, hottest part of M700 is 79F. I have 'em stacked but separated with 1" pads.

@Palouse That’s very interesting. I wonder why the ICE modules of the M700 run so much cooler than the Hypex NCore 500? Both are class D. Hmmmm. Maybe @jamesh knows?

There’s no way the Marantz could be stacked. When I called them, they said give at least 6" of clearance.

I’m confident the M700’s will sound fabulous with the LRS. If I already had a preamp and phono preamp, likely would have gone with the M700…

The KI Ruby doesn’t have anything to do with the Model 30, does it?

@Craig_Burgess they both use the exact same Hypex NCore class D modules, just different amounts of modules. Model 30 uses 2, the Ki Ruby uses 4. The higher end PM series also uses the same modules. . The preamps are different for each line. I read reviews that had listened to all 3 lines and said the Sonic signature for all 3 is similar. Which was part of my attraction, the Model 30 seems to be an excellent value with trickle down technology from the big fish.

The internal photos of the Ki Ruby and Model 30 are very similar.

I don’t know as much as I probably should about the NCore 500, but it’s probably just a simple difference in the biasing strategy. Even with a pretty hefty load, I’ve never felt the M700s anything more than lukewarm.

@jamesh Thanks for the insight. The NCore 500 in the Marantz is proving to be every bit as hot as class A/B. Even with no music playing, which would cool down class A/B. I wonder how the heat affects the sound? Both positive and negative.

I seem to recall reading that the M700 is cooler while under a load—or am I imagining things in my “pre-dotage”?

If they were Class A that could be the case, but not D.

@Palouse Upon your comment I’ve been testing the Model 30 (class D). And it oddly enough absolutely runs cooler playing music than sitting idol. Sitting idol the AC Infinity component fan ran literally all day, like 12 hours straight, to keep the temperature under 85. When playing music, it has not gotten above 83 and the fan has remained off in SMART mode.

How many of you out there have tried the Magna Risers stands with Magnepan LRS and what was your opinion of the products?

@Clarity I’ll know in a couple of months!

I think you’ll be really pleased with the performance. I’ve been watching the posts here on the LRS and also the different third party stands people are choosing. I don’t own the LRS but I do like what I’ve read about them and the Magna Risers stands. I do have a pair Magnepan 1.7i and have been using the Magna Risers 2nd Airborne and I think they are a fabulous upgrade to the original factory stands. I’ll still be watching this post with great interest in the LRS and any mods or third party upgrades people add on and what they think about them.
Most people that use the LRS seem like they are having high-end enjoyment and fun at a very reasonable price! I’m in the US by the way.

I own the LRS and the Magna Riser Multi-Riser model. Magna Risers are fabulous and genuinely take the LRS to yet new heights. Rob, the owner/ designer of Magna Riser has taken the art of Magnepan stands to the nth degree, beyond where any normal human could, or perhaps should, go. Worth every penny. IMHO, any buyer of the LRS ought to factor Magna Risers into the cost, right off the top.

Like @Clarity, I don’t have the LRSs, but I do have the .7s, and I use MagnaRisers Multiriser stand (Mk II, I think?). For me, they took an already amazing image and snapped it into crystalline focus. What really surprised me was that the bass seemed clearer and better defined, too. even though I’m using the higher positioning allowed with this particular unit, which one would expect would decouple the panel from the floor’s boundary reinforcement. However the physics of it works, it works.

I’m using the LRSs on Magna Riser Airborne stands with PS Audio M700s and a pair of REL T/5i woofers. Happy as a clam.

Folks, this is MOST encouraging. When I corresponded with Rob I knew I’d made the right decision to go with his Magana RIsers. Y’all confirm that. The enhanced clarity and bass are what I was seeking. 7-8 weeks until I find out for myself.

I anticipate won’t be disappointed. I too have the MagnaRiser Airborne with the LRSs and PSA M1200s. They are as advertised.

I would also like to note that the pair of Magna Risers I installed are way lighter than the factory stands, This works out well for me as I move one of my 1.7i a few feet every day to the spot where they sound best. Interesting because to me the Magna Risers look as though they’d be heavier. They really glide on my short pile rug.
The main detail is the Magna Risers really positively improved the sound quality of my speakers. The other thing is I use two Rel T/7i with the Magnepans and I worked on placement starting with one T/7i with the 1.7i about 21/2 years ago then added the second Rel about a year ago and I think I have the speakers and subs set just right, but I thought by changing the stands I was going to have to redo all that positioning again…I didn’t move any crossover or volume on the Rels and did not move the Magnepans at all. The Magna Risers just made what was there better. I like them and I think most people agree after they try them. The LRS are a bargain. Even with the extra cost of the Magna Riser stands the LRS can be an even better sounding solution.

I just placed a PS Audio power base under my Magnepan LRS. The results are mild to moderate improvement in clarity and improved leading edge of notes, attack, which brought great sense of being at the performance. The bass was more present and felt and precise and no changed in settings of my Rel stadium III. These LRS are definite step up from my Dynaudio Confidence 5.
