… they say more than thousand words!
There’s not much to see. What I can show you is the before and after woofers. Would that be interesting?
You can see in these photos how the magnet size differs. Not sure if you can see the fancy spider of the new one vs. the single wimpy one of the Infinity. Certainly the cast frame vs. the stamped frame, the massive surround of the new one compared to the wimpy Infinity one, and you can’t see all the fancy shorting rings, linearizing circuitry and tremendous Xmax travel differences, but this can give you an idea.
I’ll put a Paul’s Post up some time with a bit more detail.
I recognize the woofer on the right. The woofer on the left looks much better.
I also like the white woofer in the middle, who seems more interested in you than the other woofers
Wow, the new one really looks better!
All this speaker tuning seems less an issue than I expected. I thought the bass chassis/crossover/volume system matching to the rest of the speaker is more sensible to big modifications of one or two pieces of that system. But it seems for a proper speaker designer it isn’t.
Hah! Nipper the woofer.
For the IRS V
ahhhh ok i was confused for a good long minute there.
I probably need to read every post, but who has that kind of time?
No, this is the woofer we’re using to replace the IRSV in Music Room II.
The woofer for AN3 makes this look puny.
Those seem to be from a testosterone fuelled world with which I am not familiar.
Only guys with I7 chips can handle such manliness…
Ah ok. Your previous post made it seem like you guys put the new AN woofer in the IRS.
I’m listening via an Intel N4200 chip. It can run a video game, so has no problem with Roon, which I run without any filters anyway.
Of course I could have bought a big, fat, sweaty and hot Intel i7, but is bigger always better? Not in my book. I’ve not been to the USA for 8 years, but it did seem to me that over here big is unquestionably better.
I’ve got the TV on sound off and they have just started an election for a new President and it ends in over 11 months time. We just had an election that was 5 weeks start to finish and after two weeks everyone was bored and just wanted it to go away. That impeachment thing that has been going on for months, they were complaining that the Americans didn’t want the UK system where we have a simple vote of no confidence and one day you can have one Prime Minister and the next day a new one. I think our system is rather good, and is not uncommon in Europe. countries like Italy and Spain go from Socialism to Fascism and back so fast it’s hard to keep track.
I’m starting to think that there is a major difference in mentality between Europeans, who just like to get on with things, no razzamatazz, and Americans just drag them on for ever. Like these AN3 speakers. One day someone will get to hear them for real. Bring it on.
You mean just like Brexit which took about three eons to resolve?
My server uses an I3. More than a few people here called me out on it.
I think each one of them relies on a mac mini. Or a TootRendu.
I am hetero, I swears it!
[faints]
I am confused, what do President elections, impeachment, Brexit and CPU’s have to do with the AN3’s.
The DSP controlling the subwoofer has a CPU, that’s about the only link I see. I can hardly see margine that computing power is the main differentiator for sound quality of the DSP.
I don’t think you are confused, that is exactly what @Nieuwro said and what prompted PS Audio to post the pictures. So I had the same impression. Sure Paul’s info is of first hand of course. Not sure whether the IRS bass towers host 10” or 12” subwoofers. The latest iteration of the AN3 host 2 x 10” subwoofers.
Nevertheless I think the Dayton label was not intended to be shown.
No sweat though, driver manufacturers do offer customization services, meaning that a particular driver design is proprietary to the company paying for the customization service or smart enough defining it in the purchase contract for the drivers. So, if that driver is custom built, the DIY people should not be able to purchase it.
Going down the comments on the original post, Paul gave a link to the new drivers at Parts Express (located in my hometown of Dayton!!) I don’t get the impression that they were keeping them a secret.
Thanks, I missed that part I am afraid.
I did too the first time. It’s well down in the Paul’s Post comments section. The only reason I caught it was because I thought it was the AN3 bespoke drivers at first and was looking for more information.
The Dayton Audio drivers are “Made in Taiwan“ too vs mainland China. That caught my eye.
