Stellar DAC - General Questions, Tips and Tricks

I just received my Stellar DAC, the one for sale, and I am very happy. Since I didn’t find much information here on the forum, I figured I would start a thread for this DAC.

1 - Can I put this DAC on its side? PS Audio responded to my email denoting they did not recommend this. Yea I really wanted to do this… the DAC is at my desk feeding a headphone amp.

2 - Is there a way I can prove I am getting bit-perfect file transfer to the DAC? PS Audio responded to my email saying, “No”. I have a Direct Stream DAC and PS Audio provides a music file to play and if the DAC recieves it bit perfect, it illuminates a lamp. Dang I wanted this.

3 - Can I turn off the display without the remote? I did not ask PS Audio this question. I never opened the remote and it is stored in the packing box. It does not look like I can turn off the display without the remote, but I discovered my DirectStream remote will. To relight the display, just press the center button and the display will light and then turn off after a few seconds. The DAC sits inches from my keyboard where I find the display distracting and don’t want more junk on my desk. If I want to see the sampling rate, I just touch the center button. Nice.

4 - Can I rename the driver that shows in Windows? PS responded “No” however I did figure out how. I really need to do this, see my use case below. There are two ways, the first is easy: Go to System → Sound and you will see the driver there… click on the “>” to the right of the device name, and you will see you can rename this device. It does not rename the whole driver you will see when you select the driver such as from windows or your player (foobar2000 for me), the beginning of the name is now your new name. It works. The second way is to edit the Windows registry. I did not try this but there are instructions out there on the ‘net. You will need to reboot to have it show. I think I will try this as I am just such a geek and would like the driver name to appear short and sweet instead of the long thing now.

My use case: I have two PS Audio DACs (DirectStream MkI and Stellar) connected to my main Windows computer (a monster AMD/ASUS I just built a few months ago). The computer is located at my desk and both DACs are connected via USB. The DirectStream is located on the other side of my room via a powered USB cable, and Stellar is located at my desk and is connected to a Woo Audio WA7 Fireflies tube headphone amp/DAC (you can deactivate the DAC chip and use the Woo as a pure amp). So when I am using Foobar 2000, I have a drop down to select the DAC I want to send the USB signal too… the two that present itself are way too similar so it is 50/50 to select the correct one hence my desire to rename it.

I also have a pair of AudioEngine HD4 powered/DAC speakers under my monitor for regular computer listening. So I have a bunch of USB drivers to select from. BTW, the AudioEngine speakers are meh. Honestly, I had a pair of Creative cheapies connected to my soundcard before this and they weren’t all that bad… kindof a surprise (or disappointment?)

The sound: I love it. The internal Woo Audio DAC is very good and I was really happy with it but it suffered from a bit of digital hard/brightness. No it wasn’t bright, but it didn’t do high frequencies perfectly. You know what I am talking about, certain instruments and recordings that were not great can become a bit annoying. The Stellar DAC took all this away. The big surprise was the soundstage and instrument definition. Yea, it is headphones but this was the biggest improvement in sound and I was not expecting it. Again, I loved the Woo internal DAC, but this Stellar is superior.

Now since the WooAudio is connected via USB, I can A/B the Stellar vs the Woo DAC with a flip of a defeat switch on the Woo and drop down USB driver selection. I can do this pretty quickly. No comparison, the Stellar is smoother, bigger/wider, and just better.

I use Focal Clear headphones and love them. Nothing irritating about this setup.

Peace, Bruce

I don’t have a problem with the DAC on its side and don’t know who at the company would have been uncomfortable with it. It’s cool to do that as this unit does not generate much heat.

I saw what you did there!

Update:

What I don’t like:

1 - Turning the display OFF reverts to ON after pressing the standby button… not cool, it should revert to its prior state. Hitting the main switch on the back OK for that, but not the standby button. Now I have to not only turn the unit on from the front, but find the remote to turn the display off… more clutter of crap on my desk and another step to operation. Oh well.

You don’t seem nice.

When ever I get a personal reply from the CEO of a company, I am sure to acknowledge the reply and thank the CEO for their time. I guess that’s just me…

Question about sampling rate display…

DSD is odd. Foobar latest updates, playing what Foobar denotes as DSD64, sample rate of 2822400hz, bitrate 5645,

Stellar denotes: 44.1/32

Directstream denotes 44.1/24

Why the discrepency and what is going on here. Why 44.1 ? Thanx much.

I’m running Foobar2000 v2.25.1 [x86] with Tools>DSD set to DSD [2822400] and my DirectStream Mk1 playing DOP DSD64 1Bit just fine. One thing I have noticed is that the current 64bit version of Foobar causes Foobar to crash on my Windows11 laptop.

EDIT: this is with Super Audio CD Decoder 2.0.10 from Sourceforge running.

What does your Directstream display when Foobar displays DSD64?

BTW, 64bit Foobar never crashed for me ever. The first version of 64bit had a bug in its inventory/DBMS system where files were dropped from the catalog, but that was fixed a while ago. Today, it is rock solid. I build my own machines… high powered AMD Ryzen 9 5950X / Asus machine where I can send the digital out from Foobar to either my big rig with the Directstream or my desktop rig with the Stellar… hence I noticed the difference in display with the same file.

The album cover is from a previous track played with JRiver MC34. As you can see, it shows DOP DSD64 1

Prior to the current release, I didn’t have any problems with the 64 bit version of Foobar but now with 2.25.1 (and the preview version 2.25.2) it crashes when I try to play a track.

Interesting it denoted DOP… mine does not. Yet it sure sounds fabulous.

What “switches” do you have selected in Foobar for DSD? Maybe I have something set incorrectly.

Nevermind…. cripes I have an incorrect setting in Foobar. Stupid… I was dicking with it moving it to my new machine… blah blah blah… Now my Stellar displays “DSD64” as it should.

I am amazed the world even turns given the complexity of this stuff.

Thanx for responding… you fixed a problem I didn’t know I had.

Good – glad to hear it.

In the process I uninstalled the 64 bit version but managed to hose the entire installation including the 32 bit. LOL

However, an unintended consequence was in rebuilding the install I’ve now got the 64 bit version to work properly. I know exactly what you mean about world turning/complexity and everything else. Sigh.

But, it’s worked out for both of us. :slightly_smiling_face:

OK, new question:

My unit failed and PS Audio replaced the “regulator”, they noted they had a bad batch come through. No biggie, it happens…

I think the unit sounds even better than I remember it. Really wide and open. Is this possible? Others have this issue and discovery?

I am really loving this thing.

It certainly is possible.

Appears there is not much community around this DAC. There is some opportunity for tuning with the filters.

No one?

Hey Bruce–I have had mine for two weeks and I’m loving it. I really don’t hear much of a difference switching the filters but you may. Good luck.

This topic was discussed extensively in the past. If you do a topic search you’ll find explanations from simple in their approach to rather technical and complex but it will shed light on what you’re looking for.

Honestly, I can’t find it. Very little on the Stellar. I got Paul’s announcement vid that describes the 8 DACs, but little else. I could not find anything on the filters for this DAC.
