Stellar M1200 Mono Beta Test

Thanks for the warm welcome @jamesh and @Elk - Looking forward to hearing these beasts. I’ll also post a photo of the B&W, PSA DSD, Halo JC-1 System shortly.

This is going to be a lot of fun. If anyone has any specific requests about how they sound with specific music, or with some of the gear I have listed, feel free to put it down and I’ll see what I can do.

I will be getting a pair of M1200s soon. I will be comparing them to a Wyred4Sound 500W amp, a 150W Butler 5 ch amp (used for Magnepan HT duties), and may others that are sitting around. I am considering using one to power a single MBL 121(the other is impaired somehow, they don’t match) for a week and then switch in the not broken in amp to be able to hear break-in without relying on memory.
The longer term plan is to use them with a pair of hhr exotics tls-1 Walsh drivers which require lots of power. That is why I chose pricier new M1200s over a used BHK-250.

I just got in the Beta program. This is going to be interesting. I recently traded up from a Stellar S-300 to a pair of M-700s. I will be comparing the M-1200s to the M-700s and a PrimaLuna Prologue 4 with a full complement of NOS tubes including Telefunkin smooth plate 12AX7s, Cifte 12AU7s and Sevlana Winged C EL34s in my main system.

My main system is full range open baffle (-3 at 14 Hz and 20kHz). This is a two part speaker. The midrange/tweeter section is the open baffle GR-Research NX-Otica monitor. The bass section is the GR-Research/Rythmik Audio open baffle, servo controlled, subwoofer with two 12" drivers per channel.

A couple audio buddies and I normally get together once a week for HiFi night. Once the danger is over and we can get together again, we age going to listen to the M1200s in each other’s system also.

Between the M-700s and the PrimaLuna, the M-1200s have some big shoes to fill. Let’s see how well they fill them.

Mike, could you describe the differences in the upgrade from s300 to the m700s? I’m running stellar power plant 3, s300, DSD sr and paradigm studio 20v5. Thanks in advance.

I went from an S300 to the M700. Midrange tonality, clarity, imaging and authority are the main improvements upgrading to the M700. I liked the S300, but the M700’s simply sound better. The M700’s sound better than the S300 right out of the box, but if kept on continuously, the sound will open up even more after about 2 weeks and will sound their best after being on continuously for a full month.

That’s my experience too. It seems trite to say it but the M-700s are a big improvement over the S-300 in every way I can think of. The M-700 also have a huge power supply compared to the S-300. I was expecting the M-700s to be basically two S-300s in a mono mode. They most certainly are not. You know that the instant you pick an M-700 up.

That’s why I said to best both the M-700s and the PrimaLuna, the M-1200s have their work cut out for them.

Thank you guys for the response. That’s exactly what I was looking for. Of course NOW I can’t wait to hear your thoughts comparing the m700s vs the m1200s!

Wanted to hop in a give a quick update. The first run of the beta amps are being built this week and will be finished with our A.P. tests over the weekend. If all goes well, we’ll begin shipping Monday the 6th. Keep your eyes out for the first few reviews to trickle in about a week from now.

Were you able to start shipping the M1200s today?

From what I gathered from our meeting this morning, we have several pairs sitting in burn right now and are set to start shipping today. I’ll know a bit more later today.

Update: We are shipping a handful of amps today and if all goes well, we should be getting the rest out the door by Friday.

Ok! My beta M1200s are on the premises!!.. Being in Boulder I picked them up from PSA HQ. Given my vulnerable age, etc, I masked up and stayed in my car as they were loaded into my trunk…then drove home. To accommodate all local sensibilities, I am leaving them in the trunk of my car (I can’t stand it!) until tomorrow (when any cardboard borne virus will die) to marinate and then I will open ‘em up and begin my auditioning. I’ll post my current setup and future experiences soon.

My Beta M1200s are scheduled to arrive tomorrow. They will be driving Rockport Atrias. My preamp is an AR Ref 6. Analog source is a VPI Classic 3 with Soundsmith Paua cartridge and Pass XP-17 phono stage. Digital sources are Esoteric K-03X and Bryston BDP-3 streamer. Current amps are Levinson 536 monos.

I have never spent any quality time with a class D amp and looking forward to hearing young Darren’s amps in my system.

After a day at the local quarantine station (bed of my pickup parked in the garage), I’ll unpack them & start the beta test.

I’m not an aspiring audio reviewer, just looking for a little fun with a new amp.

Stay Healthy

Craig here…from Boulder. My new 1200s (serials 61/62) are now out of quarantine and installed in my system. PSA burns them in for 48 hours at HQ before packing them. So mine are still at the very beginning of running/burning in…which, I understand, can take some good time. The 12AU7 input stage will take some time, and, I learned today, even the Class D ICE output and/will take some time too. I can’t even turn them up yet, anyway…
When I got my M700s, I cobbled together some 8ohm/100W dummy loads for running in. I may put those on tonight so I can run the 1200s in overnight. More to come including my setup. Stay home and enjoy!!

Sweet, can’t wait to hear what you think! Craig’s the lucky first that lives here in town and I can tell they’re serving him well.
