Strictly Jazz Sounds (Part 1)

I whole heartedly agree. I purchased a “share” and waited for the release. Numerous delays. Played it once and thought meh. Not at all motivated for a follow-up listen. I truly enjoyed her earlier pieces, but this one just seems to be over reaching. One of Frank Kimbrough’s last performances.

Just listened to it, very cool. I love the electronics/noise colliding with the saxophone. I’m not familiar with the OM group, although I’ve heard of all the players. I have several of Urs Leimgruber’s cds on hathut, he is a very out cat. I just listened to a cd that came out last year with Leimgruber, Barre Phillips and Thomas Lehn it’s available on tidal, also very cool.

I will continue to listen. My high (probably unreasonable/unfair ) expectations of this album probably have influenced my enjoyment.

P.J. Harvey meets Peter Brotzmann, jeez.

This was the subject of a snarky review in Stereophile. The reviewer patted himself on the back for listening to the entire album. He did say that Mary Halvorson can play really fast . Damning with faint praise.

I enjoyed the album very much. People should not be so put off by Anthony Braxton.

It is definitely worth a listen. I find it best for me not to try and find structure but to let music like this define itself. I let it flow over me and find all sorts of goodies in the process.

I agree as it’s the best way to experience Braxton. Don’t analyze the music or look for what’s not there.

Jazz and more here. . . This is a 2 cd set of solo piano renditions of Jobim works, reverently and often sedately played as if this were Chopin or Satie. . .which is a very fitting treatment for this beautiful music. My listening companion Fiona the miniature red dachshund loves this.

Okay, I finally got my copy of this record in and get to hear Cecil “Kid Haffy” Collier. I don’t know any other work by this guy, but I hear him as heavily influenced by Jimmy Rushing. My first thought was “who put benzedrine in Mr. Rushing’s Ovaltine” because the tempos are a bit brisker than those Jimmy sets but they still have that Basie four to the bar blue feeling. So . . .if you want something similar I’d recommend exploring Jimmy Rushing’s catalog especially his Master Jazz and Vanguard recordings.

You’re welcome of course. You also might enjoy Joe Williams with the Basie band during the Roulette period–his stint then was sort of a modernization of Rushing’s stint with Basie in the 'thirties and 'forties. They each had a similar gravitas of tone and unique response to the beat.

Here is a Joe Williams - Count Basie I can recommend

Yes, Williams I’m familiar with…

Okay, listening further I’m going to throw out three other names whose singing I was reminded of:

Slim Gaillard
Babs Gonzales
Bennie Green

The most uptempo singing brought these to mind. I love these three.

Just finished listening to Terje Rypdal’s latest ecm LP release, Conspiracy. This one takes me back to his earlier ECM works, with its soaring guitar.

Thanks! Next for me is to find out the small group recordings with them (no big band, no strings  )

That’s easiest for these three.

No Basie band? Can’t be a jazznut then.

Anna Webber and Angela Morris compose/play/conduct. Very interesting new large-scale jazz.

Big Band generally…sure, Basie … sure sure, Big Band with vocals…also nice on several recordings.

Just this special demand was for small group vocal recordings like the Zoot album ;-

Okay. All these singers have small group recordings, not hard to find. Babs and Slim are 'forties and beyond, but Slim recorded into the 'seventies and my favorite of his is “Slim Gaillard Rides Again”–a very well recorded stereo Verve date. (I personally think Slim was a genius). There is a Jimmy Rushing on Classics DVD-A that sounds astonishingly real. (I think Basie thought Rushing was a genius).
