Strictly Jazz Sounds (Part 1)

All I will say is that I “Dig” this one. (Couldn’t resist). :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Rita Reys “Rita A Go Go” Philips

I ordered one of these “Five Original Albums” of Reys because it had her Jobim album which I wanted to hear, and because I have liked her 'fifties work; I like the Jobim, and there were four others. This one is interesting. I am used to hearing English spoken with this Dutch accent I guess from my years in Swaziland; my wife says she sings “weird” but it doesn’t seem weird to me. Very vivid sound in this live recording! The songs are very much “of a time and place.”

This is a wonderful album. It won the Pulitzer Prize for music in 2016. I don’t believe that Henry has actually performed on a cd since this was released.

After today’s discussion of Wynton, and his place in the jazz universe, I thought I would post this. Apparently trumpeter Nate Wooley was deeply influenced by Wynton, and this album has covers of 9 tunes drawn from Wynton’s early albums.

A very cool and respectful effort. I would never have expected Nate Wooley to do this. You can read a review of the album at:

I have the cd, but it is available on tidal and qobuz.

The last of Pharoah Sander’s Impulse releases, with Joe Bonner on piano. This mix of Spiritual Jazz and free jazz improvisation is best exemplified by the first cut, Elevation. The piece starts with a wail from Pharoah calling on the musicians, followed by a bass groove laid down by Calvin Hill, and pianist Joe Bonner laying out a repetitive phrase anchoring Pharoah, who ultimately takes off about a third of the way into the piece.

I have been revisiting these Sanders dates since Universal Japan just released a budget series of these on SHM-CD with apparently new mastering.

The new mastering is interesting. Far from loud, very crankable. At lower volumes the horns appear lower in the mix than my previous version (20 bit US masterings by Eric Labson) but goosing the volume brings a very clear and dynamic balance. I listened to Elevation this week and two others that came in my first batch, the remainders arrived yesterday from Japan and will get spun in the coming hours and days. I love Impulse Sanders!

I too love Sanders Impulse and some of his early Theresa releases as well. I’ll never forget seeing and hearing him at Joe Segal’s Jazz Showcase in Chicago. What a gracious human being! Regarding the SHM-CDs, on I hunch I just ordered a copy of Elevation on SHM-CD, due out in the states at the end of January.

Where are you picking up the Budget Impulse SHM CD releases? I did order one on Amazon, but I wouldn’t describe the price as “budget”.
Thanks,

I have been ordering from cdjapan.co.jp – this is a wonderful site that packages superbly and is very serious about speedy order filling and shipping. They also have a points system that saves about 5 percent a year, up to about 10 percent if you buy a lot over the year. The one caveat is: shipping is now high due to the pandemic and only DHL really is reliable. But my last order the discs were 10 each and the shipping (when I bought nine at once) was less than four dollars each when divided over the parcel cost–which is likely cheaper than any US outlet who is likely doing something similar and charging on top of that.

One note about DHL: the orders I have used them with have arrived at my door about 3 days after shipping. That is pretty amazing.

Aha, down the rabbit hole I go! Lots of 10 - 15 may be the way to go for me as well.
Any standouts you recommend off the top of your head?
DHL in 3 days, incredible!

Well, my last orders have included all the Sanders Impulse, all the Shepp Impulse and the Candid releases by Mingus, Newport Rebels, Roach and Booker Little (all the Candids are mono mixes). Very happy with the sound of each of these. Also the recent UHQCD/MQA of Coltrane titles are fantastic in sound (I don’t have a way to decode the MQA but the Redbook are new masterings that are superb). The most recent Coltrane titles on UHQCD without MQA are also improvements on previous cd reissues.

For the most part when it comes to digital I’m RedBook. Never dabbled into UHQCD.
Vinyl remains on the top of the stack in this house, streaming for exploring new, to me, music, and CDs where vinyl isn’t a realistic option. Example Pharoah Sanders Elevation $80-$300 on vinyl, that’s a bit much even for an OCD collector.

I just thought I’d take a pause and say how much I appreciate everyone’s participation and sharing of your jazz interests. I do take listening suggestions seriously and typically will listen to a track at a minimum, the whole album as time permits, and commit with a purchase on occasion. Time to look for additional shelving.

With that I return to Nate Wooley as recommended by jghughes2. It’s been too long since I listened to this on the Portuguese Label Clean Feed. For those curious about Wynton Marsalis this is a must listen.

UHQCD, like HQCD and SHM-CD and Blu-Spec and Blu-Spec CD2 ARE Redbook discs. Each of these material and/or pressing difference discs/systems in my opinion produce a subtle difference when I am able to compare the same mastering from a regular cd to it, though many seem to disagree–mostly the ‘bits are bits’ crowd. The real plus to most of these HQCD and UHQCD, SHM-CD that have been released in Japan though is that the Japanese companies have tended to either master anew or release their perception of the “best” mastering on these, and they imo almost universally sound better than their earlier cd counterpart releases.

I love vinyl too. . . but I sold my best vinyl when hard times hit me in the early 'eighties and moved to cd and I now have more than 30 times the amount of cds and SACD than I have LPs. . . and I have geared my system more to digital in accordance. I still prefer to listen to pre-tape jazz on vinyl in general because I feel the 'fifties, 'sixties and 'seventies reissuing engineers were closer to the sound of the shellac and vinyl than modern reissuers or at least I often prefer these reissues in general to cd counterparts. But in general I am a music seeker and seem to have to keep seeking and buying–and I won’t pay 40 dollars for a reissue LP or that or more for an original LP when I can get a cd for a third or less of the cost. . . I buy a lot of cds, rarely buy LPs these days unless it’s a bargain price.

Charles Mingus “Dynasty” Sony Japan budget cd

I was inspired to play this disc seeing Lafayette Gilchrist post his playing of it on facebook. Such a powerful album, so exquisitely arranged and dynamically performed.

Cool alternate EP cover from Europe:

I about fell off the couch, as I am finishing up a listen to this very album when I eyed your post. Enjoying it a lot. Great straight a head jazz.

Well I went and did it. Down the rabbit hole and still digging with a couple dozen ordered and a dozen bookmarked. I have the Heavy Weight Champion on vinyl and saw it available as SHM-CD, considering it as a future purchase, assuming I like what I just ordered,

Great stuff…I Identified the ORG Music LP as the best sounding and also have the Pure Pleasure 2LP set as there are a few add. tracks.

@jazznut, you lost me as to which album you refer.
