Strictly Jazz Sounds (Part 1)

My most recent copy of the Mingus Dynasty album is the 2014 ORG reissue. Waiting for the tubes to warm up to spin this later today.

This blew me away when I first bought it about 5 years ago. Amazing improvs, a few that he has notated and performed with larger ensembles on later releases. Available on tidal and qobuz.

Not sure how much interest there may be in Japanese re-issued UHQCDs but here is a link to recently released jazz on Impulse!:

This just showed up yesterday, Dave Holland, Chris Potter and Zakir Hussain, their take on CoDoNa, which was Don Cherry, Nana Vasconcelos, and Colin Walcott.

Updated the CD with vinyl released on 2019, recommended by a local jazz fan. Thanks Thomas!

There is also a January 20, 2021 batch of Sanders and Shepp titles.

I made that purchase yesterday.

Sure. But others might want to know about the SHM-CD titles this year, I only mention it because you put the May releases out there for others.

This was released late in 2020. Apparently the recording comes from Tony Oxley’s personal library. Decent sound, very nice tri-fold cd packaging. Two tracks, 33 and 24 minutes. They really did play so well together.

Winding down to some Coltrane on SACD after a day of cross-country skiing. Could use some fresh snow, 5-8 inches predicted for Saturday/Sunday.

This album has what I consider to be one of the hardest grooving tracks I’ve ever heard - “Katia”

Darryl Jones on bass and John McLaughlin on guitar.

Norwegian take on the avant-garde featuring Mat Gustafsson. Check out their cover of the Robbie Basho song Blue Crystal Fire.

Alice Coltrane’s Ptah the El Daoud, strongly recommended for fans of spiritual jazz of the late '60’s and early 70’s. Featuring Pharoah Sanders, and Joe Henderson. A great companion piece to Pharoah’s Jewels of Thought.

Latest (2020) release from the Necks. This is a studio effort, three tracks rather than one of their 60-minute live improvs. Great sound.

A killer line-up.

Something conventional…listening to the full glory of this trio.

I just finished listening to that! One of my faves.

Local tenor legend Irv Williams was playing on his 80th birthday many years ago, and asked for requests. I said Lush Life, and he looked concerned. The pianist said, no problem, that’s 158 (in their “fake book”).

Irv played one of the best performances I’d ever heard, totally nailed it. He came to me during the next break, thanked me, and said he’d been afraid of that tune for 50 years because of Coltrane’s performance.

Finally, check out the Clifford Jordan version on Steeplechase Records, Live at Ethyll’s.

Happy listening!

Sun Ra and the Arkestra from 1971 bringing the great Watusi.

Is this of which you speak, Clifford Jordan Live at Ethel’s on Mapleshade, an audiophile label put out by Pierre Sprey? I’ve had this CD since it was released, and concur on your assessment of Lush Life.
