Strictly Jazz Sounds (Part 1)

This hint you gave a few times really was a great one, a beautiful album! The spare ones of Ellington still beat most others.

Glad you enjoy it. I find the “book” fascinating the more I listen to it.

Ww were near Honest Jons, a great record store so popped in and bought this.

Then saw this on the counter and bought it for my son for his birthday. Walking past an hour later decided i needed one for us. Fremer raves about it. Enjoying it now. Voice of a generation.

Yes. Very atmospheric. In general I tend to prefer his earlier works. Spinning this one at the moment as I work to meet a deadline.

Yes, also my favorites, although nearly all are great.

Here an even earlier one I have. The second track is a good test for pace and bass definition. The fast bass line sounds a bit muddy if not on good level.

Joe Henderson’s Inner Urge featuring McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones and Bob Cranshaw. Hard hitting Henderson hear, classic stuff IMO. Music Matters SRX vinyl.

A Joe Henderson recommendation, Our Thing, with a bit of an avant garde, for its day, aspect to it, with one foot firmly planted in the Hard Bop school. What’s not to like, Joe, Andrew and Kenny.

I have neglected the music of Don Byron for too long, way too long. His clarinet playing is superb, and Jack’s drumming on the first cut really mixes things up, ivey divey.
This is a fun and solid set.

Excellent set led by pianist Izumi Kimura. First time I’ve encountered her, apparently she plays out a lot, but she has not been recorded very often. Guy and Hemingway support her nicely.

At least one of the best sounding, maybe the best sounding ECM I know. And the musically best Sclavis album for my taste. A real discovery for me.

I was streaming this last night and agree 100% with you on it being one of the better ECM releases recently. I’ll pick up the CD when it arrives at my local shop.

Streaming this in Hi-Res at the moment and yes it is a fine recent ecm release. Thanks for the recommendation. Off the top of my head I was not familiar with Louis Sclavis, but doing a little basic research I learned he has performed with the Henri Texier Quartet.is known for his fusion of French folk music with jazz, and has recently performed with hurdy gurdy player Valentin Clastrier.
