Yes indeed, it is fantastic.
Sad news, as I just received this note from saxophonist Max Bessesen:
Ron Miles was one of the greatest musicians and people I’ve ever known. It was an enormous privilege to learn, play, and record with him and I am devastated that he has passed.
My heart is with everyone in the Colorado music community and with his family. Ron gave up some of the best tours in the business so that he would never miss one of his kids’ (Justice and Honor) birthdays.
The song of his that I have been listening to the most since yesterday is “Average” which he described this way:
”We’re all in this together. We’re all trying to make a contribution. And average just means you’re not more special than everybody else. Everybody’s special."
Thank you Ron. You were truly special.
Sad news about Ron Miles.
Right now
Tom Harrell “Colors of a Dream” Highnote cd
Alto Saxophone – Jaleel Shaw
Bass – Esperanza Spalding, Ugonna Okegwo
Drums – Johnathan Blake Escoffery
Trumpet, Flugelhorn – Tom Harrell
Vocals – Esperanza Spalding
Oh no! That’s terrible news.
He was a bit older than me but I remember him as a student at CU Boulder. Maybe he was a Senior when I was a Freshman. He used to play with Art Lande and his Russian Dragon Band (Rush-and-Drag’n Band). I recall he then went to MSM for grad school which is where I did my Master’s years later (his degrees were obviously Jazz Studies while mine was Classical). Some nice recordings with Frisell, Joshua Redman, Brian Blade, Jason Moran, etc.
Very sad…
For the adventurous creative music listener, a CD sale of sorts.
I’m not much a jazz fan, but when you said Ron Miles it sounded familiar. Over on the “FR 30 in da house” thread, Chris Brunhaver mentioned there is a Ron Miles recording coming out on Octave Records soon. They had used a track as a demo during one of the set up videos. Assume this is the same person, if not please ignore …
It most certainly is that same trumpeter.
New cd on Firehouse 12. I think this is their second release, taking a couple of listens to get comfortable with it. Superb lineup:
Tomas Fujiwara - Drums & Vibraphone
Gerald Cleaver - Drums
Mary Halvorson - Guitar
Brandon Seabrook - Guitar
Ralph Alessi - Trumpet
Taylor Ho Bynum - Cornet
Ron Miles, cornetist who imbued modern jazz with heart and soul, dies at 58
The cornetist, composer and bandleader combined a distinctly American harmonic palette with an openhearted emotional clarity uncommon in modern jazz.
RIP Ron Miles.
Is Mr. Giallorenzo still playing? Haven’t seen any new recordings in a while.
Good question, actually an excellent one as I have the answer without any need to research it. He is teaching at Chicago’s Old Towne School of Folk Music, is interested in returning to the live performance scene soon (based on our recent conversation), and looks forward to future recording opportunities, (though none are planned at the moment). COVID-19 resulted in cancellation of one of his gigs with BlueStem Jazz, and personally I’d like t o see us re-book him in one sort or another.
Now on to Force Majeure…
