What a twofer, Cherry and a scappy bunch of renegades! THANKS, both evaded me.
Would love to hear your observations on Turnaround.
It will be some time as I am working through 20 Axpona acquisitions as well as the above posted RSD items.
I need to buy this recording. I’ve been streaming it for several years now. It’s fantastic. If you play this in the background at a dinner party, inevitably someone will ask what it is.
I’d like to think it merits more than background music. Yet to give it a listen, but it has been added to the stack so to speak.
Nice pairing vocals and double bass. She has a fine voice, but maybe a bit too much reverb for my taste in the mastering. Sinne Eeg and Thomas Fonnesbaek, Eeg Fonnesbaek.
Having LP versions of On the Corner, Big Fun and Get Up With It, I’d consider the addition of the Miles Davis Space-Funk Turnaround (Rare Miles from the Complete On the Corner Sessions) to be a natural progression. Let me get the wrap up out of the way, way recommended for the performance. The mix is just OK with Al Foster’s cymbals too forward and prominent in the mix. Cymbals sound disjointed from the drum kit, and are out in front of Miles in the mix on Jabali.
I knew I was in for a treat with the first track Jabali, kicking things off with Henderson laying down a funky groove, followed by Al Foster’s cymbals and drum kit, with Mtume and Don Alias providing percussion accents. Bennie Maupin joins in with bass clarinet. Love that instrument! With Jabali there’s a lot going on. instruments weave in and out adding highlights and accents.
Side One wraps up with U-Turnaround, a strong finish. My favorite side is the B-Side offering The Hen, Big Fun/Holly-wuud. If your on the fence and are keen on Big Fun there is no reason to hesitate picking up a copy.
Regarding the pale blue vinyl, personally prefer carbon black but this copy is quiet with no surface noise. Unfortunately the lead-in is impacted by a thumb print sized depression on Side A affecting the first two minutes of Jabali.
Some one at the pressing plant picked up the record by the edge before the vinyl had a chance to properly set-up. So my copy oof Jabali has a Pink Floyd DSOTM 33-1/3 heartbeat. Initially I thought it was Miles and Teo’s intent!
Just get yourself a copy and share your thought as well.
Rahsaan Roland Kirk & Vibration Society, Rahsaan Rahsaan, original 1970 LP. I should add this 1970 Atlantic release of Rahsaan Rahsaan, recorded live Christmas night 1969 sounds so you are there and natural compared to Miles Davis Turnaround! This is an incredible album, kicking things off nicely with The Seeker. Rahsaan dedicated the first track to Johnny Hodges. Also nice to hear violinist Leroy Jenkins on The Seeker.
Thank you for the extensive comments. Looks like an upcoming acquisition.
I have the material on the box set. Which is not the best sounding box set–the LP may sound better but I’m good.
