Roland Kirk with Jack McDuff “Kirk’s Work” Prestige/Universal Japan RVG cd 2023
Roland Kirk – tenor saxophone, manzello, stritch, flute, siren
Jack McDuff – Hammond organ
Joe Benjamin – bass
Arthur Taylor – drums
This is a good one, I am happy with my FIM CD. Have not heard the latest Acoustic Sounds SACD, I assume it is a double layer SACD/CD.
No, SHM-SACD are single layer SACD.
From the cdJapan page:
SHM-SACD discs are fully compatible with standard Super Audio CD players, but they do not play on regular CD players.
Sonically this is a typical sounding mid-70s live recording, as in nothing special. Sonic limitations aside the performances here makes this a contender. Some fine piano work by Horace Tapscott and a strong support from the rhythm and reed sections. Nimbus records is offering a subscription to the Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra Live at I.U.C.C. Unfortunately the initial release is sold out. Those interested may find additional information here:

Images from last night’s Craig Taborn solo performance at Chicago’s Constellation. Craig was in fine form performing his compositions, a most enjoyable evening of solo piano.
For those who enjoy solo piano in the Great Pacific Northwest, Craigs tour continues in Seattle, Vancouver, and Portland, with a quick detour to Brooklyn, and then wrapping up in San Francisco.
This is one I pull out to check out how the system sounds. . . and then just get sucked into the music every time.
Miles Davis “Miles in the Sky” Mobile Fidelity Labs SACD
Yeah I know. I don’t cherish LP playback the way others do. This SACD sounds better than my LP did on previous systems of my life, and I no longer have that LP. For the price (I think I paid 25) this SACD is a helluva deal.
For those that do appreciate vinyl playback and frequent this thread the MoFi 45 rpm LP is splendid, sounding very nice.
Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers “The Sesjun Shows, Vol. 1” Solid Records Japan cd
I used to overlook later Blakey but that has proven to be a mistake. The man led good bands to the end.
Another Art Blakey release, 1981 in this instance, demonstrating Art’s ability to find new talent. Prime Time is not up there with the late 50’s and early 60’s Jazz Messengers, but still fine for later period Jazz Messengers.
