Marcus Roberts “Time and Circumstance” Columbia cd

I love this disc. Roberts is a phenomenal player. I saw him live and I’ll never forget his hands speeding in a blur across the keyboard, each note perfectly articulated.

Hank Mobley A Caddy for Daddy, as some here have noted Hank is no John Coltrane, but to my ear that’s not the point. Truly enjoying this Tone Poet LP, even with a few of Hank’s missteps on this otherwise fine Blue Note set.

Possibly an obvious choice considering it is Halloween. A most welcome energetic set Jackie McLean Demon’s Dance, again a Tone Poet LP reissue.

Carmen McRae “Carmen Sings Monk” RCA cd

The woman knew Monk a long time, from the 'forties, and that shows in her interpretations. It’s been too long since I have spun this wonderful disc.

An appropriate Halloween listen, Albert Ayler Witches and Devils.

I liked how Miles would let the occasional misstep remain in his recordings, though he may not have admitted them as such. Music, especially improvisation, should accept, even embrace missed notes or stumbles.

I couldn’t agree more, to a degree a sign of one pushing the limits.

“It’s not the note you play that’s the wrong note – it’s the note you play afterwards that makes it right or wrong.”

Yes indeed, Miles had it right unless one is having a problem with their embouchure, which on A Caddy for Daddy it sounds as though at times Hank was having some difficulty. A wonderful album all the same.

Rhetorical question: Is there a bad Arista Freedom recording?

I’ve yet to come across it, and my thanks too Michael Cuscuna.
