Strictly Jazz Sounds (Part 3)

Archie Shepp only smooth album are with Horace Parlan!

Here’s one of the album I cherish:

Now spinning: It’s About Time by Joe Morello (1962) — the legendary drummer’s first major outing as a leader. A new download from HDTT (DSD64) Elegant swing, superb brushwork, Phil Woods on alto sax, and a young Gary Burton on vibes. A forgotten jazz gem that reminds you why drummers revered Morello. A new download from HDTT in DSD64.

I’d spin this if it were handy, but it is currently not at my summer home. A fantastic performance and great sound on this Trio double LP release.

This version of the Unit is so powerful…I recently found a copy of the ‘2 Ts for a lovely T’ box set by the Feel Trio (Taylor with William Parker and Tony Oxley) and Oxleys’s drumming is more cerebral/painterly than what Cyrille produces…

Now spinning: Without Deception — a masterclass in piano-trio jazz from Kenny Barron, Dave Holland, and Jonathan Blake. Elegant, conversational, and deeply lyrical, with the kind of interplay that only comes from musicians listening as closely as they play. Modern jazz at its most refined.

‘Lightening Dreamers’ - Exploding Star Orchestra

Amazing jazz/funk/electronic melange. This is a smaller incarnation of the Exploding Star Orchestra.

Killer Lineup.

Rob Mazurek - director, composer, trumpets, voice, launeddas, electronic treatments
Jeff Parker - guitar
Craig Taborn - wurlitzer, moog matriarch
Angelica Sanchez - wurlitzer, piano, moog sub 37
Damon Locks - voice, electronics, samplers, text
Gerald Cleaver - drums
Mauricio Takara - electronic percussion, percussion
Nicole Mitchell - flute, voice

Have not listened to this great set in a while..hard to believe that it was released 14 years ago.

Mary Halvorson :: guitar
Jonathan Finlayson :: trumpet
Jon Irabagon :: alto saxophone
John Hebert :: string bass
Ches Smith :: drums

Mazurek has been on a roll lately IMO

It is an excellent line-up, the three “John’s” bring much to the “game”.

New release from Tyshawn Sorey…

Tyshawn Sorey – drums, arrangements
Adam O’Farrill – trumpet, electronics
Mark Shim – tenor saxophone
Lex Korten – piano
Tyrone Allen II – bass
Fay Victor – vocals on "Members, Don’t Git Weary

Spi-raling Horn, something recent from Marilyn Crispell, Jason Stein, Damon Smith and Adam Shead. The quartet will be playing at the Chicago Art Institute June 11, followed by a performance at Madison’s North Street Cabaret.

A fun listen and a bit more reigned in, message wise, than earlier releases.

Very cool set of duets…

Ab Baars - clarinet, saxophones

Terrie Ex - electric guitar

Where it started, Max Roach Members, Don’t Git Weary. A fine album featuring Gary Bartz, Charles Tolliver, Stanley Cowell, Jymie Merritt, and Max. Note, Jymie on electric bass and Stanley switch off from piano to electric piano, still maintaining a modal position bop feel.

I’m trying to talk myself out of buying this. I don’t need more versions of the Prestige albums, but the reviews say that the Plangent process sound is amazing…

I opted for the CD version, no complaints. Having the Prestige releases on Analog Productions vinyl I have no reason to duplicate.

Charlie has been most insistent on a lake paddle the last few days. Calm water and warm weather tend to make for a fine paddle.

Exploring new territory for me.

Now Playing: Mostly Coltrane — Steve Kuhn Trio with Joe Lovano (ECM)

A thoughtful and deeply lyrical tribute to John Coltrane. Rather than imitate Coltrane’s fire, Steve Kuhn and Joe Lovano explore the beauty, spirituality, and emotional depth of his music. Spacious ECM sonics and masterful interplay make this one a rewarding listen.
