Strictly Jazz Sounds (Part 3)

This immediately comes to mind. Julius Hemphill Dogon A.D. with Abdul Wadud on cello.

“Four!” is sharp, swinging jazz from four masters in sync — smooth enough for background vibes, rich enough for deep listening.
If you like Miles Davis’ “Relaxin’”, Oscar Peterson, or even modern chill jazz, this will hit a sweet spot — both timeless and approachable.

Nice blend of trumpet led jazz and ambient electronica. Moody!

Hampton’s got a really bad reverse pivot goin’ on there. Red looks like a player. Barney puttin’ for dough. Shelly has a decent finish position.

Excellent set with pianist Misha Mengelberg playing with a host of Chicago-area musicians.

Misha Mengelberg: piano

Fred Anderson, Ab Baars, Ken Vandermark: saxophones

Fred Lonberg-Holm: cello

Wilbert de Joode, Kent Kessler: bass

Zoot Sims & Bob Brookmeyer “Tonite’s Music Today/Whooeeee” Storyville/Muzak Japan 2 cd set, disc 2

Wow, these Muzak reissues sound so much better than any other version of the Storyville or Black Lion issues I’ve ever heard.

Lon, where did you purchase that set? I’m assuming it is a new release.

Hey John I know cdjapan carried this and I think I bought mine from dustygroove.com–a few years ago they had about two dozen lp facsimile releases from Muzak Japan at really low prices–this one is no longer in stock, I think originally it was from 2017 or so, and I bought my copy in 2023.

Thanks, looks like this is probably unavailable at this point
.

Likely. You have to be the man who never sleeps, or a time traveler with unlimited fuel, to not miss out on many Japanese reissues.

The music is out there–I think that Fresh Sound has a cd with these two LPs on it, and who knows. . . they may have lifted Muzak’s mastering.

If you’re into West Coast jazz but want it raw and live, this one’s gold. Manne’s drumming is tight but laid-back, giving the horns and piano room to shine, and the sound is warm and clear—like you’re a few tables back with a whiskey in hand.

A soulful, intimate jazz album spotlighting Randy Crawford’s warm, expressive vocals paired with Joe Sample’s elegant piano.

Digging into the second John Zorn ‘Bagatelles’ box
volume 5, Kris Davis quartet.

Kris Davis - piano

Mary Halvorson - guitar

Drew Guess - bass

Kenny Wollensen - drums

George Masso & Dan Barrett “Let’s Be Buddies” Arbors Jazz cd

Close friendly jazz in excellent sound. Masso is a seasoned pro of decades of jazz leadership and a multi-instrumental master and Barrett is a virtuoso trombonist and can play a mean trumpet.

Haven’t played this since the early 2000s—once a favorite, now back in rotation. Expect sophisticated, introspective jazz: melodic, swinging, and rooted in tradition, delivered with clarity, sensitivity, and elegance.
