Sunlight: Installation and Technical Issues

Thanks Michael. I’ll get these over to the team.

Damn ! Oh well. For $50 bucks and some soldering, I live with DSD64. Better than an 8-Track Cartridge :joy:

Thanks for confirming @Paul172

TRADUCTION AUTO GOOGLE :

Hello, I thank you all for your suggestions and various opinions.
I have connected an SDCARD reader via USB (16 GB card formatted FAT32 on a PC) on the DIRECTSTREAM JR, with the files of the last version of May 4th; the player is not recognized … the blue PSAUDIO logo does not even blink.
I also unplugged all the cables behind the DIRECTSTREAM JR and repeated various tests after several hours; without results !
I tried loading YALE again and then switched to SUNLIGHT; nothing to do…
Except for a sending of a functional USB key by PSAUDIO (against payment …), I think that I will definitely stay under WINDOM (which I also had a lot of trouble to load more than a year ago), whose same loading procedure at the time does not work with SUNLIGHT.
French distributor Alteraudio did not respond to my request.
I acquired the DSJR from the company ELECSON KLS in 2017 in France.

Thanks everyone.

Arry.

Bonjour,

Arry.

This may not be Sunlight related but since it’s never happened before I figured I would mention it.

I turn the system on and there’s no sound from the speakers while playing a disc on the PST.
The DSD senior dac appears to be dead.

So I figure it’s time to reboot it.
As soon as I turn the power switch off a loud crack comes from the speakers for an instant.
Whatever it was also caused both BHK 300s to shut down.
I applied power to the DSD and it booted up normally.

I restarted the BHK 300s and they also seem to be OK.
I played a disc and everything is back to normal.

Any theories?

If the system doesn’t mute automatically when the power goes down the PIC (display) processor is wedged. A power glitch can hang the PIC. Non PS Audio I2S devices which provide 5V can interfere with the boot in many ways, including wedging the PIC. On some releases I’ve wedged the PIC by hitting too many buttons on the remote too fast during testing. That hasn’t happened for a while.

Hi Ted,

First I would like to congratulate you on making the best firmware to date! All the other ones where more or less subtle progression but Sunlight is a huge leap in terms of sound quality for my DS junior, thank you very much for the work you have done over the years it really was like getting a new better sounding DAC with every release and with Sunshine it is like getting a 4 times better one.
With regards to the AUTO issue is there a chance that it will be fixed? Not a big problem considering the huge sound improvement but it is a bit sad to lose some functionality with a final firmware release.

I think Ted has mentioned that with any new release some speaker realignment (i.e., position, toe in, etc.) might be needed as the sonic signatures/nuances change. Certainly I have heard differences in all the firmware versions since I’ve owned the DSD Sr. I haven’t done/tried this due to time constraints and laziness, but will probably go through the process of optimizing my Maggies and subs one last time now that we are on the final firmware version. It’s a time consuming process, but worth the effort. Good luck! Gorm (also in Philly):sunglasses:

I suspect that if nothing else is found we won’t do another release for just the auto input select - but I’ve been wrong before. There’s probably something amiss with the Bridge, but it might be that a Bridge software update could fix that.

would it be the case even if I dont use the Bridge? I only use I2s and optical Bridge is not even connected to network.

I was only pointing out that if nothing else is found there might not be another release of the FPGA/Sunlight. The Bridge can update independently so any bugs in it might or might not require a rerelease of Sunlight.

Thanks Ted , will check once in a while if it there is a fix. Anyway the DAC now sounds fantastic with Sunlight regardless of this small functionality issue.

Why do you have to restart it at all after loading the new firmware.

Every time I’ve ever powered the unit down and then back the card was installed and the firmware reloaded. Is this incorrect?

It’s a modest risk to reload the software on each boot. Power glitches could start a reload and then power off during the load…
After you successfully load the software you could make a directory on the SD card and move the release there.
Especially with Windom, rebooting after a software install will make sure you have a clean boot. Otherwise the display processor could still be running with variables initialized from the previous release instead of from a boot. This shouldn’t matter, but the old control processor code has some problems.

Oh boy. I’ve been leaving the card in with the firmware in the root directory since release 1.2.1 and didn’t know. I’ll move them to a directory and just leave the card for the album art since I use the Bridge a lot.

Thank you very much, Ted.

Thanx Ted… but… questions…

I am going to reload Windom just to A-B Sunlight. I am examining the load files… Besides the fpgxxxxx.hex files, there is another that is different: DSD00500.hex and DSD00500.hex while the other load files are the same.

Question: Should I re-load the whole package for a given version, or just the fpgxxxxx.hex files?

Reason I am asking is that I understand some of these packages had bug fixes for other items other than your code for the FPGA. I don’t want to lose the enhancements or introduce an old bug.

Please advise.

Peace
Bruce in Philly

It is possible to swap out only, say, the FPGA file, but if you do you have to edit the LOADER.TXT (or whatever it’s called) file to refer to the correct FPGA file. Don’t mess with the formatting of the LOADER file, don’t add or subtract spaces, lines etc.

Thanx Ted,

I gotta think about this… I don’t want to brick the unit. I get the spaces issue… I learned to code on Hollerith cards!!

Peace
Bruce in Philly

You won’t brick it. It just doesn’t start the upgrade if it doesn’t get what it expects. I once used an editor that deleted empty lines at the end of files when it saved them. It took a while to figure out that that was the problem with my upgrades.

I have replaced the DSJ0300.hex in Windom to DSJ0402.hex from Sunlight and updated the LOADER.cfg acordingly. The firmware loaded fine and the broken AUTO functionality is now operating as it should be. I am just wondering do the other files influence the sound quality or DSJ0402.hex from Sunlight is where all the magic happens?

fjr15318.hex is the FPGA code that affect sound quality the most. The Auto input select is unfortunately broken in that file. If you are mixing and matching, don’t report any bugs until you reproduce them with an official release.
