Sunlight: Sound Impressions

As the Sunlight firmware accesses portions of the FPGA not previously used a run in or burn in of the Sunlight FW is recommended. Those who have completed a load and burn in report 100 hours more or less. Mine continues to burn in and has about 400 hours on it. It is at a different location as such I just let it run while I am away for a couple of weeks. The transformers could be installed by the unit owner depending on soldering skills and soldering station/equipment. Edcor XS4400 transformer available as below, parts lead times vary so patience is a necessity:

If you need to have the transformers installed, @wctaudio, typically on this forum, is offering the service at a very reasonable rate. Once decided I suggest dropping a PM through the forum to him.

I believe you are referring to using digital filters which are linear phase, some others use minimum phase or other non-linear phase filters. Non-linear phase filters change the timing of the various frequencies relative to each other. That messes with the wave form shape. The DS Mk II will have similar features and it will also have linear phase filters.

Lower noise floors can “slow the music down”, there’s less garbage for the brain to filter out so there’s more brain bandwidth available for the music which lets you think more about the music per unit time. This feels like there’s more time. The Mk II will have a lower noise floor.

Just curious, how long did you have your brothers DS plugged in and warmed up before doing the comparison?

About half an hour. The testing lasted for about two hours. We did not notice any change in sound of his DS during the whole time.
I know with my system, after ten minutes, I don’t hear any more improvement with further warm up.
Now with break in, that’s different. It takes weeks for the Sunlight and transformer to sound it’s best. For our DS’s, it’s been way over that period.

WellI assume that you leave the DS on all the time and just place it in stand-by mode when not it use, so warm up isn’t an issue, but if a DS is left unplugged for a length of time, it takes time for things to get back up to speed.

His DS wasn’t unplugged for very long, probably 15 minutes for him to get it over here. He lives a few blocks from me. Anyway, after two hours of blasting away with it, I believe it was quite warmed up. It sounded great when we started testing and sounded just as great at the end. It was at the very end that we got very critical. That’s when I converted from Windom back to Sunlight on my DS, and that’s when we noticed the huge difference the transformers made.

I live in Norway so I suppose I would have to do the solder work myself. Used to work as a service engineer long time ago, but hopefully I still have some soldering skills😄Will the new transformer fit directly on the motherboard solderings eyes, or do I have to modify something?

Doing the work yourself is not easy unless you have a lot of experience in desoldering. The transformers act as heat sinks and a lot of heat and quickness is needed to suck up the solder. You should PM @wctaudio and ask him. Just remove the circuit broad and send it along with the transformers to him and he can mail it back when done. Believe me, he has done many in this forum, and rest assure he is really good at it.
If you decide to go at it yourself, yes the XS4400 fits exactly as the stock. Just remove the stock and the new one has the same pin configuration. Slip it in and re-solder and you are done. Give it some time to break in. It can sound a little rough in the beginning like all new devices. Once broken in you will realize it was well worth all the trouble.

Mine were just done by @wctaudio and hopefully will be home soon! I can’t say the prices are going to be the same so I will tell you what I was quoted. $100 for the board only $200 for the complete dac. I (you) pay for shipping to and from. The removal of the board is very simple and can be done in 15-30 minutes tops with a suction cup and a Phillips screwdriver time depending on your skill level.

Has Ted mentioned what his thoughts about the Edcor transformer are. I remember him saying when he chose the transformers in the DS he specifically asked the manufacturer for more loss to reduce high frequency noise.

The DS was designed for both the stock transformer and the XS4400 transformer (both from Edcor.) I recommended the XS4400 years ago as a good value mod and a fellow reported that he did it and liked it roughly last September on the Modding the DS thread. Then things went nuts

The XS4400 will let a little more ultrasonic noise thru, but that seems like a good tradeoff to the modders. It might make a very few systems that sounded best direct to the amp sound a little better with a good preamp.

Thank you Ted!

My BHK Preamp is waiting patiently!

Hi Ted,

Do you know if external power supplies like Sbooster or Farad’s can be used for the analog board power supply upgrade on the Directstream DAC?

The DS modification thread covers this carefully. You need 12V at at least 1A and you need to share a ground with the rest of the DAC. On that thread there are various pictures, and ideas of how and what to do.

Thanks Ted!

Hello everybody,
I have a Bridge II and recently bought a Lumin U1 Mini connected to the DSD via an “Inakustik Excelenz” USB cable. After a long period of running-in and especially after updating the DSD to Sunlight, I inserted the Bridge II into the DSD. I am amazed at how much better it sounds than the Lumin. The QS is definitely more complete, thicker, richer. Anyone who still has the bridge, try it again, I am convinced that they will be shocked by the quality of the sound. I think Sunlight gives the Bridge II an edge too.
Good Music to all.

Indeed, Sunlight does improve every input including Bridge II.

Yes, it has improved my vinyl playback via the NuWave Phono Converter for me. Sunlight was a great blessing we were bestowed.

I just requested a system update on my Innuos Zenith MK3 music server and it installed a completely new version 2.0.4 which includes a streamer (no need to use the Orange Squeeze anymore).
My very early impression (did not have the opportunity to listen to much music on my DSD Sr + Sunlight) is that SQ seems to have improved with richer medium and sweeter highs.
Anyone else noticed any SQ improvements with their Innuos music servers updated to 2.0.4 ?
