So it must 2 zones or less than . My CPU is there and it has a fan about 3 zones or less. And it is very quite and not bad. But the net gear I have has two hard rives and the fan it’s duo something not bad but you hear it running as the hard drive , s hum as well . The net gear is in the basement level office area with other equipment so no biggie. So is the consensus that the ds713+ is good ?? I am only looking for answers as the collective here is beyond my self thinking. Please understand I am asking advice with no penalties for it not working , and I mean that…
And if and when Paul comes out with a new bridge or what ever that’s fine, as I just want the bridge I have for now…

That's hard to say, because I usually don't hear it. I have my DS set on "quiet mode," which runs at the fan at a lower speed but lets the temperature get a little higher. The NAS comes out of hibernation and the fan starts after a half hour or more. I think it runs pretty much continuously thereafter but I'll pay some attention to this next weekend. It might cycle on/off more frequently on the faster mode.
My 213+ is also very quiet but I still replaced the fan with a noctua fan, now I hear nothing unless I put my head behind the machine, these fans are great, I’m sitting 4 feet from the DS1512+ right now which has two of these fans in it and I can barely hear it. As far as performance goes you don’t need the higher end models, I did compare the 213+ with the 412+, I did prefer the 213+ buy a margin but it could be a “break in” factor, the 412+ was newer. (I did run the unit hard for two hours before running the tests).
As far as raid goes, I have read many times not to run the ssd’s in raid, double the write times = half the life of the drive. Also, my buddy at the computer store said if you’re not running raid in the nas you can install any dive you want, the compatibility is only for the raid function. I have about 1000 albums all in flac, this is about 439gig, but, I’m sitting here thinking before I go buy a large ssd, do I really need the whole collection for serious listening? Not at all, I’m sure I won’t listen to 80% of it. BUT what if I rerip everything to wav, oh the pain, the biggest factor is I’m male and don’t think very rational so I will probably go for the 1 tb.
My conclusion is ,
Does the nas sound better than the pc, absolutely
Is the nas a cheaper route than a high end pc, absolutely
Do you need the top of the line model with all the power, “for audio”, absolutely not.
Speaking of backups quickly, my friend also lost all 8 hard drives in his server after a storm a couple of years ago, the only thing that saved his music was me, I had a backup of it on my system. He now has mine backed up as well. If someone breaks into your house, takes your nas or server do they have all your music and data? I back mine up 3 or 4 ways.
The DS213+ has indeed quite good results:

Very good and thanks for posting. I will be in NYC and near bh photo so I will buy the unit and a SSD 940 gig drive . No matter what I end up I will need a server for the music anyway . I have a surface pro doing nothing so it will be my interface or whatever . Thanks

Anyone know if the 213/413 works with the mds protocol? EEE802.3z
just thought I would post it here too,
well, my worst nightmares have come true, the SSD’s sound different :(( I installed the 750 Samsung evo, sounded good but the magic was gone. same with the Samsung pro and crucial m4, back to Intel we go. I’m testing the S3500 series right now, I think we have a winner, but it’s early, I’ll post the results, tomorrow I will pick up the 530 series for a test.
Wow that us a shame , good luck . As I am buying one and not going through this testing for a while. To me it is mostly just trying to play it reliable over the network. If not the heck with the bridge and I will use the surface USB to an off ramp 5 and into the i2s HDMI and done…

Fascinating. I wonder why.
Another intriguing sound difference is between brands of batteries in high end portable digital audio players. My guess is that different batteries have differing voltage drops and thus impact the sound. This would be analogous to different tubes in a tube-rectified power supply as different types of tubes have different voltage drops. This is just my WAG however.
Batteries is something you can measure though. It’s different levels of noise. It’s chemical related. All batteries are noisy really . Now your into something I know. I have tested them myself . Not with sound but seeing the noise on a scope. . Steve from of imperial audio recommends a hi end PSU over batteries too.
It’s the drops to a point , but it is the speed of the battery in response to demands. Some move faster , this is why and very highly reg PSU is better .

Exactly.
It is pretty tough including a highly regulated plugged-in PSU in a portable device. :)
Lol yes it is and I get your point… Hey I finally new something here and you took it away so fast…
Ok I started the process. Updated the SSD first in my CPU. Next installed drive booted up set my static address and the rest all good.
Next updated the ds213+. Firmware done.
Here is where I have a situation. I have the minim server version setup , but need java . Not sure what Java to use, also when I attemp to install it is alway not correct format . I know to use the manuel install and I have read post of useing the comminity also . But no luck. Need help please.

go to here http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/embedded/downloads/javase/index.html
download ejre-7u45-fcs-b15-linux-ppc-e500v2-headless-26 sep 2013.tar.gz, you will have to create an account to do this.
create a shared folder- name it public
place the file you downloaded into it
copy this link http://packages.pcloadletter.co.uk/
in the synology package center click on settings, then click on “package sources”, then click on “add”, paste the link in the location box, click ok, close package center.
reopen package center, click on community at the bottom, install java se for embedded 7
make sure you have user home enabled
go to control panel, user, click on user home tab and enable
install minimserver , install minim watch on pc remember to set transcodeing to wav24
I would also recommend using google chrome not IE when accessing the nas.
