Happy Anniversary!
Speaking of amps coming and going… Can anyone guess who I got these gems from?!
Even Sir Bentley already approves of them!
And yes, I’m running them through a heavy duty extension cable my father made many many years ago. Stupid ground issues in this room/house (not 60Hz hum, but an annoying buzz). This is just going to put the dedicated 20amp runs to this room to the top of the priority list for this coming fall.
You keep stepping it up year after year! It looks great Chops!
That’s the point I suppose. LOL
Thank you, sir!
I have to say, I am totally amazed at how much better these amps sound vs the Emotiva. Even being powered through that old 20ft extension cord! Don’t get me wrong, the Emotiva is a very decent amp and was capable of scaling up with equipment upgrades upstream, but my suspicions were correct about it possibly being a bottleneck for the Pass/Auralic combo.
Getting these Stratos amps up and running in my system has completely lit a fire in this setup. One thing I noticed right away was a complete fullness and evenness of the sound stage across the room. Before, that sound stage ran the width of the room well enough but seemed to be in “clumps” so to speak. Now it’s just one large, solid sheet of sound like an IMAX screen in your face.
The second thing that stands out clearly is the center image and vocals. It is now locked down in the center, and vocals have an actual presence of physically taking up space in the room between the speakers, as if that image alone has width, depth and height to it.
I’m also quite easily picking up other subtle details further back in the mix, far back in the stage, off to the sides, stuff that would seem to be typically berried/lost in less resolving systems, such as mine before these amps!
Yes, I was happy and content with the Emotiva amp, and it did an excellent job, especially considering its price point, but these Odyssey amps are on a totally different level. I would venture to say that this system is getting up there to “reference” levels. And if I compare it to a lot of the systems I’ve heard over the past few years at the Florida Audio Expo, I’d say my system surpasses most of them at a fraction of the size and cost.
Are those amps from Iconoclastic Bob? If so, it’s from one good home to another. Congrats.
Yes… Yes they are, the one and only Bob.
What a great person, as is his wife, and their two sweet pups who seemed to really like me. I would have loved to sit and chat with them for a while. I hope we cross paths again in the future.
Thanks for the kind words! I really appreciate that.
One thing is for sure, I have to stay out the “Marketplace”. This darn site has cost me quite a bit of serious coin these past couple of months. LOL
I’ve been told you never get to hear a really outstanding amplifier until you spend $200K on it. Seems avoidable.
(and it should have at least 13 fuses)
LOL!
Yeah, I’d venture to say that’s easily avoidable, and for good reason.
I know these Stratos amps have at least ONE fuse each!
Using Jeremy Clarkson’s voice… Sitrep… The Stratos amps have 4 internal fuses and 1 external in the fused IEC connector.
5 is closer to 13 than 1. LOL
ByeBye Blackbird, err… Mark Levinson.
A real nice clean set up. I love the openness.
Thanks!!
The room does not really look so “yellow” in real life as it appears in the photo.
Why are the speakers in the middle of the room? Lol
much better than too close, especially with tv position
