The DS and Roon after the delivery of RoonReady

Murrayb said If it is a whole package, does that mean Roon will only work with the Bridge II installed in a Directstream? or, will Roon also be able to stream to the Bridge II if it is in a PWD?
I asked this a couple of weeks ago and Paul said it would absolutely work with the PWD

You bet! Anything that supports the Bridge II. Junior, PWD, DS.

Just got a note today from Roon developers they think they’ve uncovered the problem with the Bridge playing high rez files through Roon and have instituted a fix in both their RAAT and the Bridge that appears to fix it. Getting closer each day.

Paul: Just tell me this wasn't one of your April Fool's jokes. Sounds promising!

No, that would truly be cruel.

When I started teaching each of my four sons how to effectively control adults by “fishing people” to believe one thing when something else is true, we had pretty strict rules about how long the fish would be allowed to dangle before releasing. I had always taught them the sport is catch and release and that would be important as they grew to be fine young men. But the rules hadn’t a time limit at first.

One of my boys had convinced their mother that stop signs with reflective tape that lit up with the car’s headlights was optional. In our neighborhood we had three stops signs and one of them had the tape, the other two did not. One evening she was driving the family home and I was shocked as she blew past the stop sign to our house. I asked if she had not seen it and she replied with excitement, “If it has the reflective material around it it’s optional!” Hmmm, where might she have heard that? I glared at the four criminals sitting in the rear seat and we had “our talk” later that evening. The culprit was forced to hang his head and admit his cruel joke to his mother.

From that day forward the rule was the fish could never hang on the hook longer than 5 minutes.

All McGowan males follow this rule to this day.

As a long time subscriber to Paul’s Posts, have to say that might be the funniest story you’ve posted.

Terri reads Paul’s posts and I’d be caught, so I posted it here.

In the meantime, due to the upcoming availability of Roon for Bridge II, I managed to overcome my initial installation problems and looked through my media library by Roon (I use Jriver so far).

What I liked:

  • the option of an "artist orientated" view on music with lots of surrounding info
  • the social media-like connection between an album, it's artist and appearance in other albums and various other aspects connected to an overspanning information environment
What I missed (unless it's my fault of not seeing it):
  • no app for iPhones (is upcoming I read)
  • no iPAD support below iPad air (both bullet points mean, Roon at the moment is not usable for me unfortunately)
  • no integration of and quick access to album assets like cover pictures and PDF files
  • no tree-like custom tag browsing (i.e. "Jazz\Contemporary" is shown parallel to "Jazz\Vocal", and not both under "Jazz")
  • no customizable views (i.e. "by bit/sample rate/album", "by genre/bit/sample rate/album" etc.)
So far it will still need some more arguments to pull me from the highly customizable and in many terms well thought-out, but from time to time slightly buggy Jriver (althought it doesn't offer the highly connected info of Roon)
adriaan said Any updates on the software developments (Bridge/FPGA/PIC)? Is it in beta release yet? Has the best sounding FPGA version already been selected?

Can’t wait

Paul,

Any chance MQA will be part of new software release?

Dave

Zero chance.

First, I still haven’t been convinced it’s worth doing.

Second, even if it were to be worth doing, it’ll take some time.

The more I am associated with it, the less I become enamored with it.

I still haven’t read one report by anyone that has had MQA playing in their own listening room on a DAC they could compare with and without it.

If that sounds suspicious, color me suspicious.

Jazznut: I'm not an evangelist, but I've been messing around with Roon quite a bit and enjoying it. Not sure about the rest of these, but I think the've got these last two covered in the current version. See the images below.

Cheers.

Roon trivia:

Aurender indicated at CES they had gotten Roon running, but it did not sound as good as their software.

Bryston made the same determination and pulled their Roon implementation from beta distribution on the BDP-1/2.

Apparently it is tricky to implement.

thanks much Jim!

I will try to check how easily such custom views are integratable into the iPhone GUI. But I’ll have to wait for its availability and cancel my free 2 week membership until then.

Any progress on the Bridge II and Roon. I’m becoming a Roon convert, especially now that 1.2 has been released. I really want to be able to use my DS DAC that is sitting in the corner gathering dust until this is resolved. I’ve got two great DACS (Bryston BDA-3 and DS DAC). I need to narrow it down to one DAC in my final configuration and Roon integration would push the DS to the lead!

We are working to get Roon integrated and Certified. Roon will be in the next DS release Torreys. I don’t know the release date yet.

Dennis

Does this mean that any technical hurdles are a thing of the past?

The high res works perfectly now - we’re down to the certification process as Dennis suggests - that means that all the commands controlling the DAC are in place, the icons working properly, little stuff. Shouldn’t be long now.

Excellent news. I am very much looking forward to being able to use Roon to connect to the Bridge II. I purchased Roon last summer in anticipation of being able to do this. Although I have used Roon directly connected via a USB cable from my older laptop, I never felt this was the best approach. I could not say I enjoyed the music anymore than if I played the same music directly from the CD. As well, by having the laptop in my living room with the stereo system with the additional cable and plug for the laptop felt cluttered.

Perhaps, once I can leave everything in my den, and be able to choose music via my iPad, I will enjoy this approach better. As well, the expectation is improvement in sound quality connected this way.

Awesome Paul! Looking forward to a dac competition in my rack as soon as Torreys is released. I have high hopes for DS and Bridge II to become the clear winner here. I was never successful with mConnect or any iPad based control over the DS DAC. Once this works seamlessly with Roon I will be in audio heaven.

I just managed to successfully install Roon core on my Synology NAS, so no further need for a computer!
