Theoretica Applied Physics BACCH

,

The TAS article seems to say that it’s designed for listening through speakers since it adjusts for head movement etc. at the listening position

I wouldn’t mind trying out the thing. But >USB28k is a bit too dear.

I have recently landed to digital world, a totally new territory for a vinyl guy like me, thanks to trusted members here, like Vince, Al, Donald, Vmax.and I have to thank them.

When they are suggesting me to invest energy to better understand something, even if I’m so lazy and conservative, I learnt to accept the challenge!

Let’s go into this new rabbit hole, with moderation as usual and one step at a time.

First of all: before facing high budget stuff plans, which is the right degree of investment you can schedule to test a significant experience? If I understand well both software (Mac is ok for me) and hardware are required to start, is this entry level enough in your opinion to appreciate this new technology or is needed a minimum set up? Which one?

Secondly: I spent time and money for my gear recently and I tend to feel scared at the idea to pull away something I have just introduced in my system: server/streamer and DAC for instance. Which is a configuration (good enough) recommended to add BACCH technology able to work with (not replacing) existing gear? It means what is needed to test it seriously (without any other bigger changes) and hear what happens for a while to decide if you like it or not?

Here is a video with PS Audio gear

TIA

Looks like the BACCH4Mac Audiophile (USD5k) or Audiophile+ (USD6k) software for your Mac is the least investment. See here.

BTW for someone like me who loves DSD this won’t work since it’s up to PCM 192

If you have a Macintosh laptop or Desktop 980 dollars let’s you try the software. It would be fine if you listen to nearfield and your room has minimal sidewall reflections

I opted for Audiophile with the mac mini and headtracker camera option. You can add infrared tracker yourself by buying at 280 dollar camera off ebay if your room is too dark. Comes with microphones for in ear room optimizations. Otherwise you take measurements to speakers from your head for filter approximations.

It turns your listening room into a giant headphone you don’t have to wear! :+1:t2:

You can put your DSD DAC in front of an ADIO or Babyface FS pro is the only way and covert to analog first.

I think they also have an HP app that puts a bit of the cross talk back? and makes the headphones sound like loudspeakers

That’s The Bacch for bitchy wife option.

If I were to try it out, I’d use the BACCH4Mac (their hardware is way too dear for me). I don’t see a way to do DSD though the software. Am I missing something?

No you would need the Audiophile version with the baby face pro fS that is for in ear headphones or connecting analog sources or other digital sources by optical.

I have a large collection of DSD256 music and it isn’t an issue for me. The down sampled music sounds excellent still.

Also haven’t bothered with the head tracking yet as I dont move around when I listen.

Will be fascinating to observe how opinions on this develop. For the moment I got that at least the improvements clearly rule out other possible deficiencies by the processing, which I think must be present as in any other such extensive processing (compared to DSD or analog or even best other DAC‘s).

I also think it’s so fresh that quite some further development (also in terms of price or licensing) can be expected.

At least it looks like the one big innovation high end audio waited for so long.

I have a feeling that someone I know well tries this…then I’d have quite some chance for experiences (but unfortunately not with phono).

I think the “digital domain” is the natural place to look for playback improvements. Once things settle down in my life a little I am going to order one version or the other. Fun times ahead!

I think there’s also room in improvement in modern technology for vinyl pressings. No real R&D has happened in it. We’re still using 70 year old plants presses for the most part.

I’m not a vinyl guy but it does have a 50 year or so head start on digital so i expect improvements to the digital side of things will continue to improve from recording to playback.

So it seems that this will only work if you have a mac in your listening room to do the processing right?
