Theoretica Applied Physics BACCH

,

Okay, sounds good. I just haven’t used S/PDIF before. I’ll give it a try. Thanks so much!

Welcome to the forum!

I really like the LX521 system but unfortunately don’t have room enough to make them sing.

That is so ironic, I said to my wife just yesterday… I would really like to hear the LX521’s

I think due to the design if correctly placed in the right sized room they would have effortless “concert hall” realism.

@Edgar_Theoretica and all,

I have taken the plunge!! Order placed for the BACCH for Mac package. I didn’t see any option for webcam to select, and presume the ORC just comes with the software. Time to go shopping for a Mac Mini!

4 weeks to ship to Australia, so I’ll have to be patient

Oh wait, we were all making everything up. We just wanted to see if we could make you order one! Moohahahaha!

Anyone know if there’s a trial/return period, similar to PS Audio products with BACCH4MAC? I’m tempted to purchase but given my past experience with DSP wanted to make sure I can return if it’s not for me… I know we can always resell it, but prefer not to have to go through with that. - Thanks.

I do not know the answer to that question but I am pretty sure Theoretica Applied Science does.

There’s a 14 days trial apparently according to Audiophile Junkie YT video, just released recently.

Not sure I agree with this argument on volume control and DAC though… seems like grasping at straws.

Oh man… now I got a decision to make  need a Mac too.

The Bacch4Mac is certainly a cost saver. But the BACCH-SP dio (no DAC) and adio (nice DAC) offer a less scientific interface, and some swell upgrades with input and output. And less little boxes that need additional little boxes.

Speaking of little boxes, I added a new little box to my Bacch4Mac setup. A nice 12 volt Farad Power Supply and an excellent cable to power my BabyFace Pro. Do I hear a big difference? I honestly don’t care. (but sure, why not?)

I added an LPS and an upgraded interface cable to the BabyFace Pro and I swear it made a beneficial difference. I mentioned this to Edgar during my ORC session and he said that it shouldn’t make a difference in normal use as it is not in the signal path. Who am I to disagree? …but I heard what I heard… I feel so ashamed

Well without the LPS the Macintosh Mini needs to power the BFP off 5 volts power supply and is also powering USB to 5V signal to your DAC and the head tracking camera plus any other peripherals like a wired mouse. It comes down how well Apple isolated and designed the mini to both power separate devices and isolate devices. Is it different 5V supply or shared current?

The BFP when attached is always on powering multiple ADCs waiting for an analog input to digitize or a SPDIF to send to mini. There is no switching in the unit between sources. My experience with MK1 and MK2 DAC is you silence inputs by switching them off with shorting plug and overall noise floor lowers. Now Ted designed that in. So it must matter what is powered and how it is powered in some designs.

Great points @Vmax - thanks! So maybe I’m not going crazy after all. Hopefully, I can cancel my therapist appointment without penalty… although she may still want to have a discussion about cables, tuning rings and EMI absorption sheets.

Seems the mini must also drive a HDMI at 5 volts if you’re hooked to a monitor. That is how I am set up too. Might explain why the BFP on LPS is a different sound. Lots of other 5V parasitic current draws on the mini.

16 GB RAM is recommended for the Mac Mini. Is there any advantage (future proof?) in optioning 32GB?

There are lots of speed test comparisons between M-1 and M-2 mini. The M-2 was actually slower until you did some configuration improvements. I would at least meet those and get the 1GnB Ethernet. The magic mouse and Magic Keyboard are good they don’t require extra USB input dongles.

The good folks who try to save money buy the less expensive 8GB version. Edgar told me that is not the good thing to do. So I bought all the gear from him. He said the Mini he provides has the 16GB and maybe some other features. Anytime I ask him if this or that would be nice he says don’t look for solutions when you have no problems. So I am sticking with 16GB.

When I saw there was an OS Upgrade from Apple for my Mini I asked if I should ignore it. His answer was “Don’t look for solutions when you have no problems” so I am ignoring OS Upgrades.

Exactly what an audiophile should do (but is never capable of)
