To regenerator or not delimma

Thank you @davida!

Glad it’s settling in nicely!

It’s amazing how much better it got in the first week compared to day one and two!

Hey Paul172 have you installed your Orange fuse yet?

I have installed the fuse but unfortunately I only had 15 minutes afterward before I had to leave for work. So evaluation will have to wait till Saturday.

Fun awaits…don’t be shocked though if the fuse starts to sound bad after
awhile…this will be part of the lengthy burn in process kinda like a
country mountain road with switchbacks along the way to a great
audio destination…

Best wishes though

Thanks David, I have orange fuses in my BHK preamp, DirectStream dac, and Oppo 203. Very pleased with the difference they have made with them.

I like the SR Orange fuses they really make a difference. What I don’t like is when one blows and another $150 for a new one! Surely they have the ability to make an audiophile circuit breaker that they can be reset.

I had some oranges fail in my preamp…but in thinking it over…
The way I would start up my system was to light up my
sources first then my Parasound A21…when on a day
following a great night of listening…my pre would lite up but no sound…

My thinking is that the inrush current draw somehow affected
my preamp as it was already turned on and suffered the consequence of
the A21’s inrush of current draw popping the preamps fuse to the audio
supply section…

Now a days power amp goes on first and a while later after in rush current…
then my pre and sources…

Best wishes friend

That’s why my DS and DMP and my former P12 never blows a fuse, they’re on all the time, no in rush of current. I now put in a little higher amperage rating, like if it uses 1a, I put in 1.25a fuse. I don’t know if that helps, but I haven’t blown a fuse since.

I sent my P10 to Boulder to have non-warranty repair work done. It arrived 3/03/2021, I have been unable to get any information on the progress. I knew it would take some time, am I being to impatient?

I have ordered a new amplifier from Hegel in January. Due to a global shortage of electronic parts, it will be dispatched in May! I would imagine the same applies to repair works?

Yeah, I need to be more patient.

If your new toy has parts coming via the Suez Canal and the crew has Covid-19, then expect deliver Christmas 2022.

Supply chains are all over the place. I ordered a phono amplifier in February 2020 and got it in July. As luck would have it, I’ve bought ex-demo since then. Wilson speakers in December, delivered 2 days later, they would have taken at least 6 months, and I bought a Shunyata Hydra Alpha A10 yesterday that I’m collecting on Saturday. I didn’t even ask how long a new one would take.

The tumble dryer broke a month ago and there were major retailers who did not have a single machine. We phoned a local business and asked what have they got and it was delivered that afternoon.

What was your rational for choosing a power conditioner vs a regenerator? Did you have a chance to audition against the P15?

thanks magicknow

You can email the service department for a status update. My bhk pre got a little held up in January and they were quick to reply.

I had a conditioner when I had Class D from 2009, then a regenerator when I had valves, I then had Quad and when I went back to Class A/D hybrid in 2016 the regenerator made no difference so it sat unused and then I sold it. I tried some Shunyata cables and a Venom block and it made a noticeable difference, so I went for that about 2 years ago. The Venom does about -24db noise reduction, the A10 -60db and a load of other grounding and triple cross-contamination, things like that, and switch mode power supplies chuck a load of noise back into the mains. The over-current protection system is designed not to impact impedance and my mains power is very stable anyway with relatively low impedance and the current draw of my system hardly changes. Even if it does, it does not affect the power supply. What my system benefits from is ultra-low noise levels and good grounding. Plus the P15 is 3 times the price, four times as heavy and almost twice as big. It’s just the right tool for the job. If it does not do the job as well as expected I can return it as I use the same dealer for almost everything.
PS Audio have been told many time that in the UK units the plugs point in the wrong direction, so depending on your plugs you usually have to raise it up. Plus it still has a C15 mains connector and mine often fell out. I much prefer C19. The Shunyata sockets also have a vice-like grip and seem much more heavy duty, but PSA may have improved on that with the current range compared to the old ones.

Getting a demo unit might be difficult, but the UK distributor appears to be working hard and I suspect he could possibly arrange it. Problem is it is so heavy. Getting a demo of Stellar products is much easier.

Bear in mind that mains conditioners are far more popular in the UK and we have two big manufacturers, Isotek and Isol-8. My dealer stocks Shunyata and AudioQuest! We have regulated mains and tend to use less demanding amplifiers. That said, I’ve used a regenerator and if needed would use one again. I was reading a review yesterday by a chap I know who was reviewing the AHB2 amplifiers (with speakers I sold to him) and he noted how his PS Audio P10 significantly improved the sound. That amp has a switch mode supply, but quite different from mine.

I was reading this after Stu McReady’s review of the M1200. Note how we like our reviews straight and to the point! It’s not a poetry competition. He’s pretty critical. It worked best with my old speakers. Rafael has been a professional violinist for decades (he leads the Allegri String Quartet) and an audiophile, so he’s got a good ear.

Thanks for the thorough reply, please report back after you have demoed the A10 for awhile

Will do. So here are the receptacles we have to deal with.

Shunyata look bullet-proof and at least half point up and C19 in (top marks). Isotek at the bottom are probably second best and has C19 in. Audioqest all point up (good) but look like flimsy plastic, and the P15 has basic plastic pointing down (not good). The US versions of the P15 appear to use the high quality medical grade receptacle pairs, but not in the UK. Plus the Shunyata has Isoacoustics type feet as standard, the P15 look second best, the others look terrible.

I disconnected my subs from the P10 and used the two outlets for my Home theater processor/receiver and HT amplifier. Definitely a better solution for my setup! As much as the P10 does for 2 channel I think it has done more to benefit my home theater rig!
