Update on Bridge II

Paul,

I carefully read your web site description of the Bridge II. FYI, You have a couple typos under the Connected tab.

“…it’s easy  “” and “Installany UPnP compatible…”

Sorry to be an English teacher (I’m actually an Engineer) Just thought you’d want to know.

Thanks! I’ll clean up typos today - I almost got to that section yesterday - it’s still the old text from Bridge I.

Yes, we will ship next week.

I was on the beta test team for the BII. The BII is rock solid, no gapless issues and the SQ is great. I sold my Aires for the BridgeII and never looked back. I use Minimserver, Bubble Upnp, on my IMAC and Lumin on my iPad. Play all my HiRes files and Tidal. Works great.

does any one know if B2 will work with JPlay which requires DOP?

thanks

Tony

I don't use JPlay, but as a B2 beta tester I have been playing DSD via DoP from MinimServer to B2 for some time.

Bridge II, like Bridge I uses DOP to stream DSD. It’s required.

adriaan said @Paul: will the PDF manual and the firmware of the new Bridge II also be posted on the website?
Yup, I'll have folks work on that Monday. We're just a little behind with the end of the month.

Good news after all! What playback software on the Mac can be used to send songs to the Bridge II?

I am not a big MAC person, but JRiver comes to mind. I am sure there are others.

I too have the Aries with their lightning server and it blows away the Bridge I and all of the Upnp based software out there. Do you feel that the new Bridge II has better sound quality than the Aries or equals it? If better, please give your impressions. Thanks very much.

I’m not the best in describing the differences but to me the Aries was thinner in sq not as much overall body and warmth

A few more are Pure Music, Amarra, one I especially liked and Decibel.

Any software that works with B I should work with B II.

Put my order in on Monday. I’m excited to see how it improves sound and connectivity.

Trade in outside the US?

I contacted hifi2die4 the german distributor and was informed that there is no trade in program offered outside the US!

Further on the retail price for Brigde II is 1150EUR (about 1300USD). I’ve to say that I’m not pleased with this situation. A bought a PWD MKII including Brigde I and letter is not performing as one can expect. And now I’ve to put out another 1300USD to get stable operation and gapless?

to fm-maniac: there is a trade-in program in Holland. If you contact ‘de Hifiwinkel’ in Nijmegen (http://www.hifiwinkel-beek.nl/) and ask for it, the store manager should be able to help you (as he did help me).

As for the costs, the weak euro-dollar exchange rate does not help with the costs I’m afraid. 895 for a trade in.

Hope this helps.

I was also on the Bridge II Beta team along with GoCubs 42, and just want to echo what he said. A bunch of us have been banging on the Bridge II without mercy for a while now, and I do believe they’ve nailed it this time - it’s solid, stable, and sounds great. One of my bugaboos all along has been that my wife has to be able to use the system when I am out of town, and for that to be workable it’s got to be 100% reliable and stable, as she gets tech-panic whenever there is any kind of minor glitch or spasm or symptom, and then I hear about it, and that’s not good. :) I am confident at this point that this is not going to be an issue. Am using a homebuilt server (updated/uprated CAPS v3, basically) with Windows 7 and J River going into the Directstream DAC. Very very satisfied with the result.

Just to give things a little perspective, Bridge II is a huge improvement over Bridge I but that does not mean it will work perfectly for everyone all the time. In my experience, nothing does in networked digital music. Some beta testers continue to experience occasional issues. In my case, using JRMC 20 with a playlist of mixed resolution tracks, it will sometimes skip a track when the resolution changes. That seems less likely to happen when I used minimserver and I had the same thing happen using the same JRMC server streaming to a BeagleBone Black plugged into a non-PSA DAC, which would seem to suggest the problem may be with the server software or network rather than the Bridge. Somebody else had a couple seconds of noise when the resolution changed. Dennis and the developers could not duplicate these issues and it may well be that the Bridge was not at fault. It’s just very hard to know sometimes.

Bridge II is great and it’s pretty much the only thing I use to play music on a regular basis. That said, there will be glitches. Some may be attributable to the Bridge, others may not be but will be blamed on the Bridge anyway. Sometimes we won’t ever know what’s at fault. Such is the world of networked digital audio.

Strangely, it was comforting to discover that other Bridge I user were having the same problems that I was. I gave up hope that any new solution would come from PS Audio and bought an Auralic Aries Streamer that has worked flawlessly with everything including Double DSD. Never a single problem except if the Wi-fi signal strength weakens but then I can choose the “wired” option.

The total cost of the streamer, power and USB cables, and now Audioquest Jitterbugs is more than 4 times the Bridge II price so I have my fingers crossed that I can sell that gear in favour of the new Bridge. I am anxious to hear comments from early adopters of the Bridge II who have been using the Aries. Nothing would make me happier than to switch to the Bridge II. smile

What’s the latest with Bridge2/DLNA support with Roon?
