Use Volume Control on Stellar Gold DAC?

My new Stellar Gold is plugged into my pretty darn old Convergent Audio Technology SL-1 Reference tube pre-amp. One thing I’m not crazy about with the CAT is its volume control, that goes up in stages - isn’t that a potentiometer? I’m sure there’s a good reason, the only problem is I’m really picky when it comes to playback volume and frequently I want something in between two positions. My previous DAC was actually a headphone amp/DAC and it had an output volume control that was great to just tweak up or down a bit if needed. But I’ve heard bad things about multiple gain stages. The Stellar Gold setup seems to want me to have it at highest volume, assuming I’d do my adjustments on my pre-amp. I think I read that the Gold’s volume control is “lossless”, but I just want to make sure I’m not doing something not ultimate if I enable the volume control. I’d probably have it at 100 and if it needs to go up a bit, go up one level on the CAT and bump the DAC down a smidge - similar approach for wanting it a touch lower. Thanks for any feedback.
