I bought a wire recorder at a church garage sale once. It came with many spools of wire recordings and many blank spools. I was able to make recordings with it. It amused me that the wire used was branded as music wire. It sounded awful. It was fun though. I have never heard a wax cylinder recording. That would be interesting.

Wax cylinders are so fragile the Library of Congress, which holds the largest collection of wax cylinders in the world, will only allow them to be replayed for archival purposes (digital format, I believe). From my point of view, these practically priceless Met recordings should also be remanded eventually to the Library of Congress, which is the best equipped institution anywhere to preserve them (my understanding is the Library of Congress even stores them in an environmentally controlled vault).
