I read a statistic that it takes up to 20,000 gallons of water to extinguish an electric vehicle fire.
If there is no hydrant available, that would take approximately 40 typical fire trucks.
I don’t know if firefighting EV technique has moved past that.
No advancements that I know of. I think the water just keeps the fire from igniting other nearby fuel.
The battery itself cannot be extinguished by any currently easily available means.
I believe the water is to try to cool the battery below the ignition point and long enough for it to stop producing oxygen.
That makes sense. I dont know the actual chemistry involved but I do know the fire departments are very leery of trying to put one out.
In a side note every Electric Humvee has been recalled due to the battery case not being waterproof so in any type of heavy precip or off road thru the creek event the battery case floods and then that lights a fuse of unknown length.
I’m not sure how they could have let that one slip by the design team but it did.
Edit:
And it’s a 2800 lb battery.
Well played!
Interestingly, used EV prices are plumetting while used dino fueled car prices are quickly rising. It is a terrible time to buy a used conventional car.
I did see a small news blurb that new car loan payments have crossed the $1k/month line in what is becoming a new normal payment. And I think they go all the way to 7 years or so in length. Fortunately I haven’t had to make payments on a car in over 20 years.
You are so right. My friend is a finance manager at a local dealer. Someone just got a new Chrysler 300 and it was $1004 out the door. Crazy for that car especially. Do the math. Unless you have cash down and good credit 50k takes you close 1000. 50k is common price for cars now. The stories he tells me about financial decisions people make is nuts.
Upside down in first car. Finance 110% to get new car and pay off old. High interest rate since bad credit. And poof 1000 a month for a 45k car. Mind you the car trading in still has loan. It’s not that old.
Happily I havent needed to borrow money to buy a car since 1998. I am old enough to remember 10% interest on a new and 13% interest on a used car loan back in the '70’s though.
My wife has an elegant ride. It is not in the same category as some of the hot cars shown here, but it is still nice. I call it a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
Sheep
Wolf?
Wolf!
Sheep wearing black leather jacket perhaps . . .
Just had my first ride in a Ferrari (360 Modena as shown below) owned by my niece’s husband. The experience is almost impossible to relay in words. Visceral, highly emotional. The sound made by that engine at 8krpm is indescribable. Will never forget it. I want one but will probably never have the “disposable income” for such a luxury. He also owns a Cayman S that reminds me of my Cayman (no longer with me so sad).
darn, even though I taught aerobatics to the owner of a Ferrari dealership, he never gave me a ride in a Ferrari
as loud inside as they are outside?
I have a 2000 360 Modena. Its a maniac and my palms sweat profusely most every-time I drive it. It really is hard to describe.
That red one is way better looking than mine.
The sound is unique and wonderful.
Ciao Sophia…
It’s a Ferrari, they’re all red underneath.
I do prefer that 360 in silver. But there is only one red Ferrari for me. Picture below of my uncle’s 250 at the 1971 NY Auto Show. The paint job is not factory original though. My uncle improved it. He mostly had Porsches though. Porsche had him over to Stuttgart once to advise on how to avoid overheating on the Long Island (Distress) Expressway. I think that only resulted in the water-cooled cars of the 80s though. The kid with the grin in the second picture is not just called Carousel these days because he goes round in circles.
Wow, what great memories.
Happy boy!!!
Driving the 360 wouldn’t bother me. It’s all of the idiots on the road that would bother me. Worrying that some schmuck is going to pull out in front of me or stop suddenly for no reason, or not be paying attention and rear-end me.
Heck, I worry about that in my Lexus!
Also, a word of advise… Never, NEVER race a Mustang. If you know, you know. LOL
