I listen to a lot of Baroque music, but there is always an elephant in the room when I do. I refrain from asking myself what I would really like to be listening to, because the answer would be Bach or Biber. Occasionally I indulge myself. This version is one of my favourites.
I’m listening to a compilation I made of all the tracks Ed Motta recorded over the course of a few years for a series of “Songbook” cd volumes featuring the compositions of Brazilian songwriters.
This is a great group of work and surprisingly administering them chronologically is a great sequence.
I love Motta’s singing, composing and playing. He’s a big man, and an even bigger talent.
I thought I had heard most versions of the Mystery Sonatas, but this one was a first for me. It was very interesting because the accompaniment is more varied and prominent than on many, and this means that the pieces see much more active interplay between continuo and violin. It gives a new character to many of them which is refreshing to hear.
