Has there been an American music artist better/more important??
There have been so many that no single American composer/performer stands out as best or most important.
Consider this list alone and the named composers/artists: The 100 most important American musical works of the 20th century
Charles Ives from Danbury, CT (1874-1954). Live recordings on the Seattle Symphony’s own label…

What a fun list! Figured West End Blues would be on the list. Another song from my current selection on the list: Body and Soul.
Of course it’s hypebole to say anyone is the best or most important. America’s history is a beautifully musical one. It’s also a slippery statement on my part: subject to any number of current circumstances. Still the statement about Louis Armstrong can easily be defended musically and culturally. I have him on my Mount Rushmore of American artists (can’t limit it to four though).
It’s a great list and fun to review while seriously thinking about the impact each has had. Unquestionably, there is no one most influential/greatest but dozens to enjoy and respect.
I’m glad you posted the comment as it made me think about it.
Donald Byrd “Byrd in Hand” Blue Note SHM-CD
So close to corny but I do love this music and it’s a great sounding CD.
Couldn’t be more different than Tennessee Ernie Ford…I really do enjoy these Ken Burns CDs.
Nice groovy, dynamic CD
Modern New Orleans Jazz artists looking to the Caribbean for their roots. Nice Afro-Cuban sound!
P.S. On the off chance someone looks this up, go right to “El Barrio” and turn it up!!!
Thanks for at least tolerating me here. My final for the weekend, hate for it to end. Uncle Lionel is a life affirming human being. He represents what I love about New Orleans culture. Have a great week y’all.
Tom Jobim “Matita Pere” on Philips. Still playing with my ZROCK2 and this one is a good test subject. . . .
