What are you spinning right now?

If only this weren’t quite so compressed. . . Prince “Planet Earth.”

Stanley Turrentine “Salt Song” CTI

Was Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis in the Basie band that backed Sinatra at the Sands? I could look it up but why when I have access to the Jazz Master.

Yes, he was in that band, he was with Basie during several stints including that band with Sinatra. He was great early on (I love him in a few recordings with Fats Navarro) and he was great in is long -standing duo with Johnny Griffin (“Griff 'n Lock”). He had a unique fingering style, and a quirky musical mind.

I very much want to hear your recording. I like Gardiner quite a bit. By the way, his massive tome on Bach is wonderful fun if you aer interested and have not read it.

Being inspired, I have now put on:

This is actually my favorite Schütz CD which I was spinning last week:

Also Elk, I was remiss in not mentioning this superb Schütz set. If your preference is for the more opulent, larger scale works I’d take this over the Gardiner in a heart beat as it captures the church acoustic beautifully without smearing details. The Archiv recording is a bit sterile sounding to my ears. Performances if anything are even better on the DHM set than the Archiv:

Been dipping into this wonderful recording:

And this arrived in the mail today and is rather stunning (if you’re into Modernism, as I am):

Naïve’s covers are often wonderful. I enjoy them a great deal.

Thanks for the Schütz recommendation!

More Vivaldi this morning:

Disc 9. I’m really enjoying this set and using these discs to start my listening sessions. Calms the brain after a hard week and gives my ears a chance to warm up. Crazy talk but that’s how it feels.

One of the classic early Rhino Records CD sets. Disc 1.

If you don’t know Clifton Chenier, go to YouTube and play “My Soul” or “Bayou Drive (Sloppy).” I assume their there. If you’re not hooked… greasy soul music with an accordion.

There was a time when “Anarchy In the U.K.” was a big song in my life. Can’t get there now…but play it here and there. The only music I’ve ever stolen (seems appropriate). Downloaded the Black Triangle version. Does it sound great…hell no!!!

One of my all time favorite tribute records (there’s duds of-course). Check out Shawn Colvin’s “Viva Las Vegas.” Transcendent!
