I got in two boxes of CTI Supreme Series cds from CDJapan yesterday and opened them up this morning. I really like these cds, less than ten dollars each in Japan, pressed with the Blu-Spec CD process, and purportedly “flat transfers.” These are all from the second batch, 16 in all in these two boxes, I have another in shipment should arrive soon with 7 more discs in the series. (Think there were 30 released).
Listening to this one, which I haven’t heard for a while and think I only have in the earliest CTI cd release from Columbia/Sony US. Sounds very nice! (Forced to do headphone listening as Lucy sleeps in).
Yes I have. There is a difference in my opinion, to me the Blu-Spec CD and Blu-Spec CD2 sound as if there were more resolution to the transfers, as if it’s a step towards a very SACD-like sound from Redbook.
The biggest difference I heard was between the US/European version of “Miles Davis Bootleg Series Vol.1” and the Japanse Blu-Spec CD, and “Vol. 2” US/European version and the Japanese Blu-Spec CD version. Not sure why, but there are clear improvements to depth of the sound and dynamics on these two sets, and all indications are that they are the same mastering.
One practical advantage of the Blu-Spec process is that the discs are much more resistant to scratching. Not that I’m rough with discs or have scratched discs, but there are some (I’m not naming names!) I know who probably should buy Blu-Spec discs!
Right now another from this second batch of CTI Supremes. A number of these have never been on CD before or have only been out once in limited edition from Japan some time ago.
This one again as I wanted to hear the Steig flute solos again. Never heard him sound funkier! He might have been taking lessons from label-mate Lateef. And this is sort of seminal smooth jazz, interesting to hear in that light.
Now this one again. Listening to this on speakers is different than doing so on headphones, in large part because I am listening to a different source for speakers and headphones).
Some nice playing on this, and lots of nice electric piano too. These CTI releases in this series have an interesting sound to the mastering.
Finally got this two cd set in . . . love these Treasury Show volumes. . . only three more to go. . . maybe by the end of 2018 or so we’ll be done with the series!
Running off to help Dad today so I’ll be taking this to listen to in the car and also these new arrivals:
Spend two evenings listening to Patricia Barber, mythologies (44/16):
And Verse (DSD):
Solid proof point the obsession with resolution and format is moot (given good hardware). Mythologies in 44/16 is completely musically satisfying and up to par sonically with the DSD album (on my system). I never fret one second over resolution anymore these days. Multichannel - different story.
