needless to say, I was simply commenting on their similar facial characteristics, not their playing style…
Me, too. I hadn’t played it in probably 30 years or more, and had forgotten all about it. When I pulled it out at random this morning, I glanced at the cover photo and assumed it was Brendel. I was surprised to see it wasn’t.
This is one fantastic recording, in a long-term survey, of Haydn’s horn-dominant symphonies. Partly due to the Eszterház princes’ love of hunting, No. 31 “Hornsignal” marked the arrival of two new horn players to the Eszterház Palace, making a total of four, in an orchestra of 18. There’s nothing conventional about this work from the very first note to the last, and lots of sumptuous solo playing, especially on flute and violin. Even the double bass gets a solo just before the end of the finale, but it doesn’t last because it has to finish on a massive fanfare for the horns.
I also noticed this on Alpha’s site, it struck me because I’ll bet anyone the cover photo is by Kaupo Kikkas, a fantastic Estonian photographer who can talk about trees for days on end. His work is instantly recognisable. He also did some great portraits of Arvo Part and many other musicians, he is a musician by training. The recording is a lamentation and a short mass. Very Estonian, very beautiful.
An excellent performance and recording! My favourite in the series.

If you’re interested in Asian music the Hong Kong label Hugo Productions is worth your acquaintance. Every one of their releases I’ve bought have been well recorded. This one gets played frequently.
