In the old days, discovery of new music or great performances was largely through radio, magazines or friends. Friends still matter but these days streaming services are a primary source of discovery. (This forum is good too.) Here are a couple of my favorite pieces but these performances from the 80s I only recently discovered. Better late than never. . . .
I heard Gilels play the Hammerklavier in 1984 when he was touring, promoting that recording. It was a 1:30pm Sunday afternoon recital at the Festival Hall, London, not the best time of day in a venue with a flawed acoustic, but it was mesmerising all the same.
Welcome to the group. I’m sure there are others here who really know what “old” is.
Incidentally, Radu Lupu made some great recordings in the 1980s. That one was recorded in Hamburg, but look out for the recordings he made at Snape Maltings. It has a great acoustic. Most recently Uchida recorded the Diabelli Variations in there, it won the same Gramophone Instrumental award last year.
I was lucky to find this original five lp set in pretty much mint condition. Playing Suite, Opus 29 now. The recording quality is a bit on the dry side but otherwise is a fine example of Decca recordings.
Such a great modernist composer with a unique style. It’s sad she didn’t live longer, appreciation of her work in the classical world was late in coming IMO.
