What Classical are you spinning?

A beautiful recording on SACD from Norway’s LAWO Classics records. The title, Leipzig!, is a nod to the fact that many Scandinavian composers received their training in Leipzig, including the four composers represented on this disc: Grieg, Svendsen, Hartmann and Reinecke. All performed splendidly by Oslo Kammerakademi, an eight-piece wind ensemble (flute, oboe, clarinet, Vienna horn and bassoon), plus double bass.

Very attractive set of music for violin and piano, very nicely played. The sound quality is outstanding, as one expects from Cobra founder and recording engineer Tom Peeters. Pure DSD256-Direct Mixed.

Last night we heard an all “Scottish” program at the ISO, featuring three works by French and German composers: James Ehnes performing Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy, plus Debussy’s “Scottish March on a Folk Theme,” and Mendelssohn’s 3rd Symphony, the “Scottish.” It was hugely enjoyable, and I came away with a renewed appreciation for the Mendelssohn, which had always been overshadowed in my mind by the very popular 4th, to the point that this morning I pulled out all four recordings I have of the 3rd to compare for performance and sound. They included Marriner and his Academy of SMitF on Argo, Paavo Järvi with the Tonhalle-Orchester Zurich on Alpha Classics, Walter Waller with the Philarmonia Orchestra on Chandos, and Christoph von Dohnányi and the Vienna on a re-release from the Musical Heritage Society. All the performances are lovely, and sound was pretty close. In the end, I think the best all-round is the Jaärvi, so I’m that’s my listen for this morning. Second, in my estimation was the Dohnányi.
