Wow, seriously?? I live about three miles from their office (which is actually on Harper Ave.). I’ve had to buzz over there a few times to pick up promo CDs for one of my clients, and have chatted with their A&R man at one of the jazz festivals. I understand Gretchen Valade (label owner, also the “savior” of our jazz festival) lives in our city as well, in a lakefront home. (She’s part of the Carhartt family, the manufacturer of work clothing.)

This, far and away, has been my favorite over the past two years. It’s also been my gateway drug into The Mavericks and Raul Malo.

All the songs are originals except for two–“Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)” and “Happy Holiday(s).” The album has a little dose of the “Wall of Sound” feeling to it. It’s a short record but a lot of fun. If the first track, “Christmas Time Is (Coming 'Round Again),” doesn’t get you up and moving, you don’t have a pulse.

A snarky and cynical but sometimes humorous take on the Christmas holiday (e.g., “The season starts in August now, we’ll see you at the mall”) . . .

This is a good’un. Got it on CD in the '90’s, I think it was.

No snark or cynicism there, only factual statements.

Bruce Cockburn - Christmas

I love the kitschy/jazzy/bluesy/cocktail stuff, but this is probably my favorite Christmas album. Great versions of all these songs.

Can “Go Tell it on the Mountain” be cool? Yes. Yes, it can be.
