The * means Lock is detected on the input you are on.
The E means preEmphesis is detected.
The B means Bit perfect.
The M means Mute is enabled
The P means out out Phase
The R means Roon is streaming to the DAC
If the E is displayed the DAC will be deemphasizing (bringing down the level of high frequencies) because the source says that the material is preemphasized. If the source is TOSLink, S/PDIF or AES3 then there are specific bits in the channel codes that indicate that deemphasis is needed. If the source is a PWD or DMP it’s coming over the handshaking wires in the “I2S” (HDMI) cable. If it’s not a PWD or DMP over I2S you probably are getting burned by an incompatibility of your I2S device and the DS.
