Nothing on ProStudioMasters nor HDTracks. No download, no Hi Res, nothing.
What’s up with this? I love that recording.

AP will be releasing an SACD eventually, but the current date is TBA. In the past a high res downloads for the other Steely Dan titles released so far have been available the same time as the AP UHQR vinyl, currently listed March 29, 2024.
Thanx…

all said and done, i do think KL is my favorite Steely Dan album.
Intrigued by the recent Steely Dan UHQR LP’s but not sure I can justify the $150 cost. (And I don’t know that I need to own em just to own em.)
Tempted to get the SACD’s of the whole catalog, but really just wondering what truly, honestly, what the best pressing (either CD, SACD or LP) would be. (Subjective, yeah, but still.)
I picked up both the Can’t Buy a Thrill and Aja UHQR. For fans of Steely Dan the Aja is worth it for the sonics, Can’t Buy a Thrill is an improvement over my original copies, but at $150 I wouldn’t do it again.
The lack of a high-res version may have something to do with this:
Thanks for sharing as it explains things, and yes Katy Lied never sounded all that great to these ears. I wonder if they’ll resurrect it based on the negative reaction to Pretzel Logic.
I had a dBX in the mid to late 70’s and used it in conjunction with my reel-to-reel, and cassette tape recorders. Initially I thought it was hot sh8t. However, once I upgraded my system I changed my tune and dumped that turd. It helped with background noise, but it squashed detail and placed a shroud over the sound. I’m streaming Katy Lied at the moment on Qobuz, and it sounds as though it was mixed for playback in cars of its era.
Interesting read, thanks. After reading it makes a little more sense to me why Analogue Productions is releasing the albums out of order, Katy probably needs the most time to remaster. I bet we see the hi-res/PCM version sooner than later though. Chad/AP doesn’t seem to worried about the SACD schedule…
Even with those issues, the drive to squeeze money out of these things is just too tempting… besides, does Fagen really have that kind of ownership over record company decisions…? Hmmm…

Note they used Magnepan speakers as monitors… wow.
I’ve owned two sets at different times… 2.5R and 20 models… I never enjoyed music more than on Magnepans.

So good news from that article, is that the original tapes, including Dias’s safety tape, (not the subsequent masters), and therefore the recording can be remixed using modern tech… pretty intriguing… again, why not done yet. I sure hope that is what they will do for the planned re-release.

AP not MFSL. You probably meant that and got your acronyms tied up…
My bad! I was thinking MFSL because I ordered Pretzel Logic via MD because their spending threshold for free shipping is $50 and AS has moved theirs up to $100. So I now wait for AP titles to be available at MD. Thanks for the correction!
I edited my previous post.
I had Magnepan Tympani 1D panels driven by GAS amplification, and an AGI preamp. The Maggies were most power hungry. A fine sounding speaker all the same. It seems the record label and Analog Productions/Acoustic Sounds is attempting to wring every last sent out of the Steely Dan recordings. Hopefully they have learned from the Pretzel Logic attempt. At $150 I/'m on the sidelines on Katy Lied.

I’ve been getting the SACDs as released, and it seems they’re now lagging behind the vinyl by at least a month or two. Aja currently is only the vinyl release, except perhaps download? To my ears, the SACDs are sounding fantastic with the noted exception of Pretzel Logic. Think the Japan SACD of Pretzel Logic is still better. The AP SACD of Two Against Nature is phenomenal.
I eagerly await Katy Lied and The Royal Scam!
No Katy Lied yet, but the Aja SACD is now shipping.
so is this a new Bernie Grundman mastering? Or same mastering just on a Hybrid SACD?
(He’s 80 years old, if that’s anything.)
PS: i did pick up the Steve Hoffman mastering of Katy Lied. Sounds great but I haven’t taken the time to do a disc-to-disc comparison with my other CD that doesn’t mention who mastered it.

I had no idea, so I skimmed a little on the Hoffman forums. Looks to be the same remaster. I’ll be interested to see how it compares to the Hoffman mastered CD I picked up last year which sounds pretty good.
