Probably a bad load
Again to me that seem to describe a bad load, which is what I got the first time I attempted to load Windom.
After going RC --> Windom --> re-boot, everything became so smooth : all the qualities of Snowmass were there, and then more.
Trying to think what couldāve been different that it Finally Worked, and the only thing is that I had no HDMIās attached for the first time since it was released, as it was in another system without HDMI sources. I seem to recall that having some effect on things at times. So if youāre still not getting something that sounds like a new and improved Snowmass, you might want to try loading without HDMI cables attached, and then reboot without the card. Who knows? Speculating here.
@Elk - Please move all my posts above to the Problems Thread ; ) (kidding, not your problem). Though I guess I should edit all of my posts or somethingā¦
Thanks, @Elk!
Huron is the oldest firmware I have on hand, and I have no SD reader on my laptop so canāt download any older files and I donāt want to buy another card from PS Audio just now. Iāll try Snowmass 3.00 to Windom next, with no HDMI. I have been disconnecting the HDMI to the DMP as I load. . . .
Weāll see late tomorrow or Monday. If I still get the same result, Iāll go back to Snowmass 3.06 for a while.
Also, listening to it now, I feel like the sonic issues with a bad load may be in some way phase-related, as it was stuck in a flat plane between the speakers with the center sort of elusive and occasionally reduced (as others have noted with instruments louder than the vocal), and the midrange and low mids generally reduced.
Thanks for the heads up regarding the HDMI as a possible contributor to the problem. Now all ya need is a good Burn-In!
Didnāt realise you had to remove the SD card for the second reboot will try that tomorrow when I have the house to myself . One issue that was giving me trouble was at the completion of an album it ? would go back to track one and start playing again . That is no longer a problem . Thought it may have an issue in MConnect . The thing Iām interested in since the Windom upgrade is how itās influenced the performance of the Matrix spdif X2 or influenced peopleās perceptions of its performance. Perhaps Iām on the wrong page / site . Anyone ?
No need to reply I found the right page and thereās doesnāt seem to be any issues with the Matrix / Windom interaction . Back to Mark Murphy .
Huron or Redcloud instead of Yale will do, i suppose.

I will be the first to acknowledge I have no idea of the process of coding for FPGA chips and how it works. Iām curious though if new firmwares completely clear all the data from old installed firmwares. Is it possible some data does not get overwritten when new firmwares are installed and some data from older installs remains? If so would this be a possible reason some find several installs are required before finding what seems to be a good load?
Windom is not an issue. The very old USB drivers are. Now that they have cpuās with 280 cores running at 9.5GHZ. No, those are still not mainstream stream PCās but if they do not update the driver they sure will be. Even a ābasicā 36 core machine cannot run it now. It simply will not install. The cpu does not offer it enough clock cycles to hook. So, you install it manually from device manager but now you better go(purchase) a good Also driver! since it will not install one, or a Wasapi driver. It seems that all these companies making tech products are not to tech savvy themselves!
Beef, you get the award for sheer dogged determination! Glad it turned out well for you.
Thanks. Well, as much as it is a PITA, I also find it fascinating. There are SO many more worse problems to have : )
Really happy for you.
Windom rocks
@Paul I fully agree and PS Audio needs to fix this and fix it quickly. Not having an update is better than having updates with vodoo and no fixes being suggested by PS Audio.
Iāve experienced a couple of weird outcomes after re-installing Windom. I wasnāt liking what I was hearing a few days after installing Windom, although I was liking it originally. So I tried installing Yale, which I never had before. My DS SR is a little over a year old and came installed with Redcloud. After installing Yale I was immediately liking the sound much more than what I was hearing from Windom, but thatās not the weird thing. What is weird is that I was now getting metadata and album art appearing on the DS screen - something I never had before. This was only when playing to the Bridge. I never much minded not seeing metadata because I keep the display turned off most of the time.
The next weird thing is that the album art disappeared after I pulled out the SD card, which I forgot to do after boot up. I then re-installed Windom, and the album art returned, but only as long as I left the SD card in the slot. After removing it, the art disappeared. After turning the DS off and re-installing the SD Card, the album art returned to the screen.
And Windom is now sounding great as well!
Is metadata and album art supposed to display when playing via USB?
SD card has to be in with bridge to get album art, by design.
Really? Duh - I did not know that. Actually, I thought the proper install required removing the SD card afterwards.
Put in a blank SD card for the album art.
