Yale Beta Test

I also noticed on past firmwares for large volume changes with the DS remote control - music playback from MC20 via bridge is stopped. But Yale did not notice this, everything works fine, maybe because now the volume on the DS and the volume MC20 is not synchronized each time the adjustment.

And another question about Yale - when playing DSD with MC20 via USB cable issued a strong hiss in the speakers. DSD with MC20 via bridge plays fine.

Mihail,

I had exactly the same problem, hissing, the first time I plugged in using the USB connection except that it was with Foobar 2000. The solution in my case was to turn off the power via the main switch in the rear of the DS DAC, wait about 15 seconds or so and then power it back and let it re-initialize. Once that was done, no more hissing either with Foobar 2000 or JRiver 20.

Hope this helps.

I frequently have the same problem when using my mini. Check your audio output for the DS in the mini's midi settings. For some reason ( I think when you have used another media player like VLC) the output for the DS is minutely changed off of 100 %. Restore this to 100% and dsd plays. It is annoying, but an easy fix.

Friends thank you, really, in the settings Audio-MIDI, it was necessary to switch from 16-bit to 24-bit, then got down to play DSD without hiss. And back when I wanted to watch clips on YouTube have switched back to the frequency and bits. Well I listen from the player through the bridge and with YouTube via the USB so normally it is not necessary to switch. Each input operates with its program.

Any idea when final version of Yale will be released?

I promised to get back and try and explain what I meant by “Yale is boring” in my last post. However, in the meantime I am testing the Uptone Amber Regen (pronounced 'ree-jen" as in regeneration, a powered USB hub that reclocks the USB receiver’s PHY and offers clean 5V if needed) on a number of DACS, including the DS.

The Directstream loves the Amber. Tonality in buckets, improved dynamics (almost enough for all music genres with Yale), and a better sense of timing. Go figure…I haven’t.

Last night I sat down and listened to my two favorite Paul Simon albums, the vastly under-rated You’re The One (DVD-A rip at 24/88) and the wonderfully charged-with-Eno-electronica Surprise album. In both cases, the colors, tones, timbres (whatever you want to call it) are produced as well as any DAC I’ve ever heard (I use HQPlayer/NAA and upsample to DSD128). It is especially important in Surprise, because that album is subtle as a gentle summer thunderstorm. The electronic sub-bass bits and pieces, the samples, the overall hum of the music…mixed with Paul’s use of a multitude of guitar styles and sounds…this album is a late night sonic journey and the DS/Yale/Regen combo reproduced every subtle cue that makes this album special (why the f… they put the completely out of place Father and Daughter song from the Wild Thornberry movie to close the album is a head-scratcher of major proportions…I end the album with That’s Me).

Paul’s You’re The One has some of his best writing, both his signature melody changes and his amazing wordsmithing. And again, the use of various guitar styles, sometimes in the same song, allows the DS to shine in many colors.

Very impressed. Try a Regen and report back.

ted_b, thanks for the post, great to hear, should have mine shortly.

Are you using the stock ps, and were you able to direct connect to the DS or did you have to use the 6" cable ?

Fingers crossed it’ll be this month.

Paul, will there be any improvements in sound? Thanks.

I'll let you know when Arnie finishes his work. It will sound different, even if only slightly so.

Roger, I think you’re talking about two different things. Paul is referring to Yale being finalized.

You are probably right.

I agree with Ted B I have been cooking in the Regen for the past several days, as I indicated previously it is very complementary to the DS. So much so I passed on trying my buddies Lampizator this week, the music is now that good. Cymbals are back where they need to be and the music is much more involving. All this for an additional 175 bucks, go figure. I had zero problem going straight into the DAC with the adapter and allowing the Regen to hang… Also I have a Nuforce linear power supply that I may try on the Regen to see if there is any additional sonic improvement.

I beleive most of us have just learned to accept first; try to understand, later.

Thanks for the report!

Thanks ted_b for your mini-reviews and thoughts in general. It’s nice to have you visit here.

Too bad the DirectStream DSD get’s so poo-poo’d at the other forums. I don’t know why all the hate - probably just the price I guess?

I do not visit other forums very often, so I have not seen the negative posts. Interesting, given the numerous excellent professional reviews.

Guessing, it is the price and PS Audio does not enjoy the mystique of a boutique brand.

What makes the PSAudio forums so exceptional is that they are not full of the very predictable d**k measuring, sour grapes, wildly exaggerated claims and snobbery that permeate so many on-line communities. I think requiring that people use their real names on forums would address the lack of civility one often sees. I guess PSAudio is such a “small town” that people realize that being mean won’t pay off. Or it could be that our forum leaders and Paul set such a good example. happy-048_gif

Geez…When John Atkinson, who has listened to, measured, reviewed, and compared the top DAC’s in the world, awards the DS “product of the Year” I kind of guess it’s a ‘no-brainer.’ Not to mention all of the other highly qualified and experienced industry professionals who have praised the DS…Hell, it is a no-brainer.
