Your Next Upgrade? (Part 2)

Gorgeous. One of my favorite things about tubes is turning the lights off at night whilst listening.

Those are really, really hard to beat

Grrr! Just when I was going to post my conrad-johnson Premier 11 for sale. A certain reluctance, as I adore its sound. Unfortunately I have too much stuff that is just sitting.

If I love something but never use it, I feel bad just leaving it in a closet. Better it should give someone else some joy.

Sounds like you know you should keep the CJ

Common sense says let it go, but

Update -
I had problems with my Taiko Extreme connecting to my network recently.
Taiko remotely diagnosed the problem as a bad C-Drive.
Successfully installed the new C-Drive replacement sent to me from Taiko.
Everything working great except I lost my Playlist I had made on Roon.
Guess I will have to make another.
Here is a quick interior shot of the Extreme before I switched out the C-Drive.
Thanks Taiko!

I love Asus boards, although I’ve had great luck with ASRock boards too.

Is the Puron packaged in a nondescript rectangular plastic box?

Tony, if you love Asus boards, then I love Asus boards.
I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about, but ok.

Computer motherboards you normally find in a pc. In this case third party components in an audio device. So: not from the mothership, but still from a good lineage.

Speaking of upgrades and for those that favor all things silver and with a sense of Italian flair ,
Glenn Poor’s in Champaign is phasing out the Gold Note line at 35% savinggs.

Give Geoff a call and tell him Rick says Hey!

The phono pre PH-1000 is often considered one of the best sounding phonos on the market.
In my recent downsizing journey I went for the little brother PH-10.
All in black of course,

So I’ve been trying a Furutech outfitted Puron plug-in (yes, it is available with a Furutech plug), plugged into the same dedicated outlet the P20 is plugged into. It definitely does something, but I’m not entirely sure if I like everything about what it does.

First, let me say that in my opinion what these things attempt to do, primarily, is attack whatever form of noise there is, in whatever way their bit of magic is designed to do. I don’t think they can extend frequency response, or alter tonal quality, or remove hemorrhoids :flushed: , and will politely disagree with those who do.

So what do I perceive in my system? As I continue to remove layer upon layer of noise that I never knew was there, I think I’m pretty much done, until a new unheard layer of noise is removed. That’s what the Puron seems to do. The improvement is primarily in cleaning up stuff that gets in the way of hearing the subtlest of details, and also the purity of vocals. But along with this I think I’m hearing a slight reduction in how “lit up” my soundstage is
almost like it might be damping down higher harmonics somehow, making things sound more “clearly in the room” but more “matter of fact”. Is it more true to how a recording is intended to sound? I’m not sure. Maybe what I think I like hearing is actually due to some of the quality of the noise that’s there until it’s removed by the Puron.

My usual disclaimer for anyone who’d never seen any of my previous observational posts: these changes are small in the grand scheme of things. But they are there.

Thanks for weighing in. I haven’t heard the Puron as I had investigated and invested in the Shunyata Research Defender which I believe is meant to be a very similar device. I found those took some time, a few weeks, to really “be all they could be,” and that similarly they removed layers of noise that were not really sensed til they were removed. I have five of these, and find that cumulatively they have compounded influence. I have one in the other plug in my wall outlet that the P15 is plugged into, and four that are plugged into four of the outlets on the back of the P15 that my components are plugged into, so that one Defender is “influencing” each of the components. (The fifth outlet houses my Rega TTPSU and my phono preamp).

There is a subtle difference with all of these, but if I remove them I don’t prefer the sound.

My next adventure in this arena is a Verafi Audio “Snubway” that should arrive soon.

I suspect I need to give the Puron more time. It has only about 75 hours on it now.

Mine does not have NCF plugs, but I have a lot of cords and the wall sockets are all NCF material. you are looking at 500 hours to fully break in.

Regular Puron still takes 150 hours.

I’ve had cords with Furutech NCFs that to me seemed like they didn’t do much of anything after a couple of hundred hours. :man_shrugging:
